Overview

prEN 15727 (CEN draft) - "Ventilation for buildings - Ductwork - Technical ductwork products, leakage classification and testing" specifies how to classify and test air leakage for technical ductwork products used in ventilation and air‑conditioning systems. It applies to components that perform additional functions beyond conveying air (e.g., sound attenuators, filter boxes, duct fans) and establishes measurement, calculation and reporting rules for product air tightness. Dampers (EN 1751), air handling units (EN 1886) and flexible ducts (EN 13180) are handled by their own standards and largely excluded from this document.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions: establishes terms such as total joint length (L), virtual product surface area (Ac) and test pressure (ptest).
  • Instrumentation & calibration:
    • Instruments checked at intervals not exceeding 12 months.
    • Leakage flow meter accuracy: up to 0.018 l·s−1·m−2 → ±0.0009 l·s−1·m−2; above 0.018 → ±5%.
    • Manometers: ±2% indicated accuracy.
    • Temperature sensors: graduations ≤0.5 K; calibrated to 0.25 K.
  • Test rig & procedure:
    • Product sealed with manufacturer’s end caps and pressurised; measure pressure and leakage flow.
    • At least 5 positive and 5 negative test pressures up to the static pressure limits; hold each pressure within ±5% for 5 minutes before recording.
  • Calculations & corrections:
    • Virtual surface area: Ac = L × 0.5 m (or use actual product area if larger).
    • Correct measured leakage qvl_measured for temperature and atmospheric pressure to standard conditions: qvl = qvl_measured · (293/(273 + t)) · (pa/101325)
    • Product air leakage factor: f = qvl / Ac (l·s−1·m−2).
  • Air tightness classes (A–D): classes specify static pressure limits and maximum leakage factor fmax expressed as coefficients × ptest (e.g., Class A fmax = 0.027·ptest; Class B = 0.009·ptest; Class C = 0.003·ptest; Class D = 0.001·ptest).
  • Test reporting: comprehensive requirements including test conditions, equipment calibration references, dimensions, calculated L and Ac, corrected leakage rates, achieved air tightness class and observed deformations.

Applications and users

  • HVAC manufacturers of technical ductwork products (attenuators, filter housings, fans)
  • Independent test laboratories performing leakage certification
  • HVAC designers, specifiers and installers requiring validated product performance for system design
  • Building services consultants and compliance officers assessing air tightness and energy performance

Related standards

1 Scope
This standard applies to technical ductwork products, intended for installation in ductwork conforming
to EN 1505, EN 1506, EN 13180 and EN 13403, used in air conditioning and ventilation systems
defined in the scope of CEN/TC 156. This standard specifies the leakage requirements for technical
ductwork products, i.e. components in the ductwork that has more functions than conveying air.
Dampers according to EN 1751 are not included in this standard.
This standard is a parallel standard to EN 12237, EN 1507, EN 13180 and EN 1751, based on the
same leakage classification.
