Overview
EN ISO 787-7:2009 - "General methods of test for pigments and extenders - Part 7: Determination of residue on sieve - Water method - Manual procedure" - specifies a standardized laboratory procedure for measuring the residue on sieve from a sample of pigment or extender dispersed in water. The method defines sampling, apparatus, dispersion, manual sieving and washing, drying and weighing of the retained fraction, calculation of residue (percent by mass) and mandatory test-report items.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to pigments and extenders dispersed in water; results can differ from the mechanical flushing procedure (ISO 787-18), so the chosen method must be stated in specifications and reports.
- Sampling: Take a representative sample per ISO 15528.
- Apparatus: metal test sieve (ISO 565) - nominal aperture must be reported (45 µm often used); brush, sintered‑glass crucible (porosity P40 per ISO 4793) or 50 ml beaker; oven at (105 ± 2) °C; balances (up to 1 000 g to 0.1 g and high‑precision to 1 mg); desiccator; washbottle.
- Test portion size: typically 10–100 g; up to 1 000 g for very low-residue products. Duplicate determinations are required.
- Dispersion: Water (300–600 ml) with an agreed dispersing agent (typically 0.2–0.5 % of test mass) or mechanical stirring per ISO 3262‑9 (stirrer speed recommended ≤ (500 ± 50) min−1). The dispersing method and agent must be reported.
- Procedure: Pour dispersion through the sieve, rinse until washings are clear, optionally break agglomerates with a brush, transfer residue to crucible/beaker, dry and weigh. If residue melting point < 110 °C, use an agreed lower drying temperature and report it.
- Results: Calculate residue (%) = (mass of residue / mass of test portion) × 100; report mean of two valid determinations to two significant figures; report “less than 0.01 %” when applicable. Precision data are not provided in the standard.
- Test report must include: product ID, reference to ISO 787‑7, sieve aperture and diameter, test mass, dispersion method and dispersant details, whether agglomerates were broken, residue description, deviations and test date.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Quality control and R&D laboratories in paints, coatings, inks and related industries.
- Manufacturers and suppliers of pigments and extenders who must demonstrate particle-size cleanliness or detect oversized agglomerates.
- Procurement, technical specification writers and certification bodies needing a repeatable residue on sieve test for product acceptance.
- Useful for troubleshooting dispersion issues, verifying milling/dispersing efficiency, and comparing batches.

ISO 787-7:2009(E) iv © ISO 2009 – All rights reserved Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. ISO 787-7 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 2, Pigments and extenders. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 787-7:1981), which has been technically revised. The main technical changes are: a) the apparatus clause has been amended; b) a number of modifications have been made to the determination. ISO 787 consists of the following parts, under the general title General methods of test for pigments and extenders: ⎯ Part 1: Comparison of colour of pigments ⎯ Part 2: Determination of matter volatile at 105 °C ⎯ Part 3: Determination of matter soluble in water — Hot extraction method ⎯ Part 4: Determination of acidity or alkalinity of the aqueous extract ⎯ Part 5: Determination of oil absorption value ⎯ Part 7: Determination of residue on sieve — Water method — Manual procedure ⎯ Part 8: Determination of matter soluble in water — Cold extraction method ⎯ Part 9: Determination of pH value of an aqueous suspension ⎯ Part 10: Determination of density — Pyknometer method ⎯ Part 11: Determination of tamped volume and apparent density after tamping ⎯ Part 13: Determination of water-soluble sulfates, chlorides and nitrates ⎯ Part 14: Determination of resistivity of aqueous extract SIST EN ISO 787-7
