Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 8: Determination of void characteristics of bituminous specimens

This European Standard describes a procedure for calculating volumetric characteristics of a compacted bituminous specimen: the air voids content (Vm) and the voids content in the mineral aggregate filed with binder (VFB) and the voids content in the mineral aggregate filed with binder and additives (VFBad) for the case of mixtures containing additives in their composition.
NOTE   For mixtures with water in their composition (e.g. mixtures produced with bituminous emulsion or foamed bitumen) the volumetric characteristics determined according to the present standard refers to “dry” bituminous specimens (i.e. compacted mixtures whose voids are exclusively filled with air).
The method is suitable for specimens which are laboratory compacted or specimens cut from the pavement after placement and compacting, either by coring or sawing.
These volumetric characteristics can be used as mix design criteria or as parameters for evaluating the mixture after placing and compacting in the road.

Overview

prEN 12697-8 (CEN) specifies test procedures for determining the volumetric void characteristics of compacted bituminous specimens. The standard defines how to calculate the air voids content (Vm), the voids in the mineral aggregate filled with binder (VFB), and the voids in the mineral aggregate filled with binder and additives (VFBad) for mixtures containing additives. Values are reported for “dry” specimens when mixtures contain water (e.g., bitumen emulsions or foamed bitumen). The method applies to laboratory-compacted specimens and to specimens cut from in‑situ pavements (coring or sawing).

Key topics and requirements

  • Parameters defined
    • Air voids (Vm): volume of air pockets expressed as % of specimen volume.
    • VFB: percentage of VMA filled with binder (no additives).
    • VFBad: VFB accounting for binder plus additives (when present).
  • Primary calculation
    • Vm is calculated from the mixture maximum density (ρm) and specimen bulk density (ρb):
      • Vm = (ρm − ρb) / ρm × 100% (reported to 0.1% by volume)
  • Specimen condition
    • For mixes containing water, densities and derived volumetrics refer to the specimen in a dry state (voids filled exclusively with air).
  • Precision and repeatability
    • Derived from EN 12697-5 (maximum density) and EN 12697-6 (bulk density).
    • Example precision statements provided: repeatability r ≈ 1.1% (by volume); reproducibility R ≈ 2.2% (by volume).
  • Reporting requirements
    • Origin and identification of specimen, mixture type and additives, specimen dimensions (if measured), methods used for densities, density values (Mg/m³), and calculated Vm, VFB or VFBad.

Applications

  • Mix design: use Vm, VFB and VFBad as objective mix-design criteria to optimize durability, rutting resistance and permeability.
  • Quality control and acceptance: assess compaction quality and conformity of laid asphalt layers after placement.
  • Forensic and performance testing: evaluate in‑situ cores to investigate pavement distress or constructability issues.
  • Users: pavement engineers, materials laboratories, highway authorities, contractors, and consultants involved in asphalt mix design, quality assurance and research.

Related standards

  • EN 12697-5 - Determination of the maximum density
  • EN 12697-6 - Determination of bulk density of bituminous specimens (hydrostatic method)
  • Other parts of EN 12697 series relevant to sampling, specimen preparation and performance testing (e.g., compaction methods and binder content tests).
