Overview

EN 3724:2004 is a CEN aerospace standard that specifies the physical and technical characteristics of double hexagon‑head (bihexagonal) bolts with a relieved shank and long thread, manufactured in titanium alloy TI‑P64001 and MoS2 coated (molybdenum disulphide). The standard applies to high‑strength aerospace bolts with a strength class of 1 100 MPa (1100 MPa) measured at ambient temperature and defines dimensions, tolerances, marking and designation for use in aerospace applications.

Key topics and requirements

  • Configuration & dimensions: Detailed head, shank and thread geometry, tolerances and masses given in millimetres (see figure/tables in the standard). Dimensions apply before MoS2 coating.
  • Threading: MJ thread series and run‑out/lead requirements referenced to ISO 3353‑1 and ISO 5855‑2; bihexagonal wrenching geometry referenced to ISO 4095.
  • Material: Titanium alloy TI‑P64001 (referenced via EN 3813) - specified for forgings/bar and wire for fasteners (D ≤ 25 mm where applicable).
  • Surface treatment: MoS2 dry lubricant coating in accordance with EN 2491.
  • Strength class: Minimum tensile strength 1 100 MPa at ambient temperature.
  • Marking & designation: Marking rules per EN 2424; example designation format shown (e.g., BOLT EN3724‑080060).
  • Technical specification: Additional technical testing and acceptance criteria cross‑referenced to EN 3818.

Practical applications

  • Use for aerospace fasteners where high strength‑to‑weight and corrosion resistance are required-typical in airframe and structural assemblies that demand titanium bolts.
  • Suited for applications requiring MoS2 coated fasteners to reduce friction during installation and improve seizure resistance.
  • Recommended where double hexagon (bihex) head configuration is preferred for specific wrenching/access requirements in aerospace assemblies.

Who should use this standard

  • Aerospace OEMs and suppliers specifying fasteners for aircraft structures.
  • Fastener manufacturers producing titanium bolts to aerospace series specifications.
  • Mechanical and structural design engineers, procurement teams, quality assurance and inspection personnel responsible for acceptance, marking and traceability of aerospace bolts.

Related standards

  • ISO 3353‑1 - Rolled external threads (lead and runout)
  • ISO 4095 - Bihexagonal drives (wrenching configuration)
  • ISO 5855‑2 - MJ threads limit dimensions
  • EN 2424 - Marking of aerospace products
  • EN 2491 - MoS2 dry lubricant coating methods
