Overview

EN 4854-1:2019 (CEN) defines dimensions and load characteristics for a narrow series of spherical plain bearings used in aerospace applications. The standard covers bearings made of corrosion resisting steel with a self-lubricating liner designed for low starting torque, low friction coefficient, and elevated duty cycles under low oscillations. These bearings are intended for fixed or moving aircraft structure parts - especially control mechanisms and operating systems - and are rated for slow rotations and low dynamic radial loads in the temperature range −55 °C to 120 °C (−67 °F to 248 °F).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & use: Narrow-series spherical plain bearings for aerospace control and operating systems.
  • Dimensions & configuration: Detailed figures and tables for two codes - Code S (without swaging groove) and Code R (with swaging groove). Main dimensions, tolerances and mass given in mm (and inches) and apply after surface treatment.
  • Materials & hardness:
    • Inner ring (ball): steel per EN 2030, hardness 55–62 HRC.
    • Outer ring (race): steel per EN 3161, hardness 28–37 HRC before swaging.
    • Liner: self-lubricating, wear-resistant material per EN 4854-3 requirements.
  • Surface treatments:
    • Code T: inner ring per ISO 8075; outer ring Zinc‑Nickel plating (EN 4826 Type 2), thickness 8–16 µm (AMS 2417 Type 2 Grade B alternative).
    • Code P: inner ring per ISO 8075; outer ring Cadmium plating (EN 2133), thickness 5–8 µm, followed by chromating.
  • Tolerances & roughness: General tolerances per ISO 2768‑m; surface roughness specified in figures (values apply before surface treatment).
  • Loads & torques: Permissible static/dynamic radial and axial loads, and starting torque limits are specified.
  • Designation, marking & quality: Rules for designation, marking requirements, technical specification references and quality management system expectations.

Applications

  • Aircraft control linkages, actuators, and operating systems where slow oscillation motion and reliable low-friction performance are critical.
  • Replacement, procurement and specification of bearings for new airframe designs and maintenance programs.
  • Use cases requiring corrosion-resistant bearings with self-lubricating liners and narrow dimensional envelopes.

Who should use this standard

  • Aerospace design and mechanical engineers
  • Bearing manufacturers and suppliers
  • Procurement and quality assurance teams in aviation OEMs and MROs
