Overview

EN 13523-11:2019 - "Coil coated metals - Test methods - Part 11: Resistance to solvents (rubbing test)" is a CEN standard that specifies a laboratory procedure to evaluate the degree of curing of an organic coating on metal by assessing its resistance to a specified organic solvent. The method uses a solvent‑soaked absorbent material on an artificial “finger” to perform controlled back-and‑forth rubs (double rubs) over the coating and records whether coating removal or damage occurs.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Principle: Repeated rubbing with an absorbent pad soaked in a specified solvent; one double rub = one forward + one backward pass.
  • Absorbent material: Cotton wool is specified (synthetic materials shall not be used). Other textile/felt pads may be used only if stated in the report.
  • Solvent: By default butanone (MEK); alternatives by agreement include acetone and methyl isobutyl ketone (MiBK). Solvent must be at room temperature before use.
  • Apparatus: Automated or mechanical device with an artificial finger (circular contact area ~100–200 mm²), capable of producing longitudinal double rubs under a constant pressure of (0.05 ± 0.01) MPa. Rub length ≥75 mm; rubbing speed ≈ 1 s per double rub.
  • Test panels & conditions: Panels must be clean, with the wetted area at least 20 mm from edges and with a test length ≥75 mm parallel to the rolling direction. Conditioning follows EN 13523‑0; dispute conditions: 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5 % RH (EN 23270).
  • Evaluation & results: Visual inspection during and immediately after rubbing. Result expressed as pass or fail at the specified number of double rubs. No precision data are provided in the standard.
  • Test report: Must include product identification, reference to EN 13523‑11, absorbent material type/producer, number of double rubs, solvent used, whether exposed substrate or next paint layer is seen, visual observations, deviations and date (full list in Clause 13).

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Used by coil coating manufacturers, coatings laboratories, quality control teams, R&D engineers and specifiers to verify cure quality and solvent resistance of coil‑coated metal products.
  • Practical applications include assessing coating readiness for handling, forming, transport and end‑use exposure where chemical contact may occur (e.g., architectural cladding, roofing, façades and other coil‑coated components).
  • Useful for product qualification, supplier verification and comparative performance testing when specifying or procuring coil‑coated metals.
