Overview
EN 2714-012:2005 is a CEN (AECMA) product standard for aerospace electrical cables - specifically the DM family: UV laser printable, screened (braided) and jacketed lightweight multicore cables intended for on‑board aircraft electrical systems. It covers 5 to 7 multicore constructions with conductor sizes from about 0.15 mm² up to 5 mm² (nearest AWG equivalents), designed for continuous operating temperatures between −55 °C and 260 °C (cold testing to −65 °C is acceptable). The standard also mandates compatibility with qualified, user‑applied markings that meet EN 3838.
Key topics and requirements
- Construction and materials
- 5–7 multicore twisted assemblies (central filler permitted for 5/6 cores) per EN 2235.
- Core insulation per EN 2267‑007.
- Tape: polyimide layer (nom. 25 µm).
- Screen: nickel‑plated copper stranded braid (material per EN 4434).
- Outer jacket: polyimide layer (nom. 30 µm) with fluorocarbon coatings (2.5 µm both sides) and a PTFE layer (0.076 mm) applied with specified overlaps.
- Electrical and mechanical characteristics
- Conductor resistance, dimensions and mass referenced in the standard (see table of nominal sections and AWG equivalents).
- Screen construction and plating continuity/adherence requirements.
- Performance and tests
- Test suite drawn from EN 3475‑100 (visual, mass, dimensions, ohmic resistance, voltage proof, insulation resistance, surface resistance).
- Thermal tests: accelerated ageing, delamination, thermal shock (260 °C), cold bending at −65 °C where specified.
- Flammability: extinguishing time ≤ 3 s.
- Mechanical tests: scrape abrasion, tensile on conductors, plating thickness and continuity, strippability.
- Marking: UV laser markability required; contrast K ≥ 50% and permanence per EN 3838.
- Quality & identification
- Quality assurance per EN 9133.
- Designation, marking, packaging and delivery lengths per EN 2235 and EN 2714‑002.
Applications and who uses it
- Intended for aircraft wiring harnesses and onboard electrical systems where high temperature tolerance, lightweight construction and EMI screening are required.
- Primary users:
- Aerospace cable manufacturers and suppliers
- Avionics and electrical design engineers
- Aircraft OEMs, component qualification teams, and procurement specialists
- Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations specifying replacement wiring
- Certification and quality assurance personnel ensuring compliance with aerospace standards
