Overview

prEN ISO 18896 (draft ISO/DIS 18896) defines a standardized laboratory method to assess the longitudinal stiffness of steel shanks used to reinforce the waist region of women’s shoes and certain men’s and children’s shoes. Developed under CEN/ISO parallel processing (ISO/TC 216), the document provides repeatable test procedures, conditioning requirements and reporting rules to calculate the shank’s flexural rigidity - a key measure of stiffness affecting comfort, support and fit.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Measurement of longitudinal stiffness for steel shanks (complete shank specimens).
  • Sampling & conditioning: Minimum of three specimens per shank type; condition specimens 48 hours in a controlled atmosphere per ISO 18454 before testing.
  • Apparatus:
    • Heel clamp designed to secure 32 mm ±1 mm of the shank without crushing flutes; clamp angle adjustable to make the loaded point horizontal.
    • Load application capable of delivering downward forces of 2 N, 4 N, 6 N and 8 N (±5%).
    • Vertical deflection measurement accurate to ±0.025 mm; timing accuracy ±0.1 s; callipers or rule ±0.5 mm.
  • Test method:
    • Shank clamped as a cantilever; downward loads applied to the forward end (typically ~6 mm from the end; ~11 mm for high-heeled shanks).
    • Measure vertical deflection after 5 s at each load level; repeat for the sequence of loads and confirm linearity of deflection increments.
    • Measure the moment length (clamp front edge to load point center).
  • Result calculation & reporting:
    • Flexural rigidity (S) is calculated from the measured load (F), deflection (a) and moment length (L) using the equation provided in clause 7.1, producing S in kilonewtons per square millimetre.
    • Report averaged S for the three specimens and include sample description, test conditions, any deviations and date.

Applications and who uses it

  • Footwear manufacturers and component suppliers use prEN ISO 18896 for product development, specification control and supplier verification of steel shanks.
  • Testing laboratories and quality-control departments apply this method for batch testing, benchmarking stiffness across designs, and verifying compliance with customer or regulatory requirements.
  • Designers and R&D teams rely on longitudinal stiffness data to optimize comfort, stability and performance for different shoe types (e.g., high heels vs. casual).

Related standards

  • ISO 18454 - Footwear: standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing (normative reference used by prEN ISO 18896).
  • Developed under ISO/TC 216 and adjacent CEN footwear standardization work (useful for broader footwear testing and material standards).

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

ISO 18896 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 216, Footwear, Subcommittee SC , and by
Technical Committee CEN/TC 309, Footwear in collaboration.
