Overview

EN 14904:2006 - Surfaces for sports areas - Indoor surfaces for multi-sports use - Specification (CEN) sets European requirements for indoor multi‑sports flooring systems. It covers complete surface systems (support and upper layers), whether prefabricated, in situ or combined, and includes provisions for testing and evaluation of conformity. Note: this standard is not applicable to indoor tennis halls.

Keywords: EN 14904, indoor sports surfaces, multi‑sports flooring, CEN standard, sports hall flooring.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard defines performance and safety characteristics for multi‑sports indoor floors and references specific test methods. Principal technical topics include:

  • Safety in use
    • Friction (grip): Pendulum Test Value (EN 13036-4) - mean between 80 and 110 (dry, 23 ±2 °C).
    • Shock absorption: (EN 14808) - mean 25% to 75%, individual results within ±5 units.
    • Vertical deformation: (EN 14809) - maximum 5.0 mm.
  • Sporting performance
    • Vertical ball behaviour: (EN 12235) - mean rebound ≥ 90% of concrete rebound (basketball).
  • Durability and mechanical resistance
    • Resistance to rolling load: (EN 1569) - minimum 1 500 N, maximum indentation 0.5 mm under 300 mm straight edge, no perceivable damage.
    • Resistance to wear: (EN ISO 5470-1) - synthetic floors max mass loss 1 000 mg/1 000 cycles (H18 wheel, 1 kg). Maintenance coatings: 80 mg/1 000 cycles (CS10 wheel, 500 g).
    • Resistance to indentation/impact, evenness, gloss and specular reflectance (relevant EN test methods referenced).
  • Reaction to fire: Classified per EN 13501-1 with specimen preparation rules and durability checks (textile floor coverings may require spray extraction cleaning to verify fire-retardant durability).
  • Environmental/health parameters: Formaldehyde emission (EN 717 series), pentachlorophenol (PCP) content (Annex C).
  • Conformity assessment: Type testing, Factory Production Control (FPC) and marking/labelling requirements (Annex D and Clause 6).

Applications and who uses it

EN 14904 is used by:

  • Architects and specifiers selecting sports hall flooring for multi‑sport facilities
  • Manufacturers and system suppliers to design and certify compliant surfaces
  • Test laboratories performing EN test methods (shock absorption, friction, wear, ball rebound)
  • Installers and facility managers verifying delivered flooring meets performance claims
  • Regulators and procurement teams referencing harmonised European requirements

Practical applications include school sports halls, municipal multi‑use arenas, community centres and indoor sports facilities where multiple sports are played and safety, performance and durability must be certified.

Related standards

EN 14904 references and works alongside standards for test methods and classifications, for example:

  • EN 13036-4 (pendulum friction), EN 14808/14809 (shock absorption/vertical deformation), EN 12235 (ball rebound), EN ISO 5470-1 (abrasion), EN 13501-1 (reaction to fire), EN 717 (formaldehyde).

Using EN 14904 ensures consistent, test‑based specification of indoor multi‑sports surfaces across Europe.

If it is decided to make no claim for reaction to fire performance, i.e. it is decided to place a product or family of products on the market as Class Ffl, no testing is required for this product or family of products. 5.4.5 Product parameters influencing reaction to fire performance The product parameters shown in Table 1 influence the reaction to fire performance of sports floor coverings and this table shall be followed if testing a range of products.

Table 3. NOTE Products of Class E1 can be used without causing an indoor air concentration greater than 0,1 x 10-6 mg/kg (0,1 ppm) of formaldehyde. The test requirement does not apply to sports floor coverings to which no formaldehyde-containing materials were added during production or post-production processing. These need not be classified, but may, without any testing, be declared as Class E1.

5.6 Content of pentachlorophenol (PCP) 1) Sports floor coverings shall not contain pentachlorophenol or a derivative thereof as a component in the production process of the product or of its raw materials. In cases where verification is required, if the content is less than 0,1 % by mass by the method described in Annex C, this requirement shall be considered to be met. 5.7 Specular reflectance Where required, the specular reflectance shall be measured using the method described in EN 13745, using an angle of 85°, and the mean value obtained shall be reported. 5.8 Specular gloss When tested by the method described in EN ISO 2813 using an angle of incidence of 85°, the specular gloss shall be ≤ 30 % for matt surfaces and ≤ 45 % for lacquered surfaces. 5.9 Resistance to indentation When tested by the method described in EN 1516, the mean residual indentation measured 5 min after removal of the load shall be reported and the mean residual indentation measured 24 h after removal of the load shall be ≤ 0,5 mm.
