Tensile, hardness, and stress rupture tests shall be performed and test specimen shall meet the requirements specified for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, Brinell hardness, and stress rupture. The method of determining the minimum full size breaking strength for headed fastener is given. Metallography shall be taken for microstructure and macrostructure properties including grain size and flow lines.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers precipitation hardening bolting material (UNS N07718) and bolting components for high temperature service. See Specification A962/A962M for the definition of “bolting.”
1.2 The following referenced general requirements are indispensable for application of this specification: Specification A962/A962M.
1.3 Supplementary requirements are provided for use at the option of the purchaser. The supplementary requirements only apply when specified individually in the purchase order or contract.
1.4 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound and in SI units. However, unless the purchase order or contract specifies the applicable M designation (SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply.
1.5 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM A1014/A1014M-16(2021) is a key standard developed by ASTM International that specifies requirements for precipitation-hardening bolting material, specifically UNS N07718 (commonly known as Inconel 718), intended for use in high temperature service environments. This specification addresses manufacturing processes, chemical composition, mechanical properties, testing, and certification requirements, ensuring that bolting components provide high reliability and performance integrity in demanding applications.

This international standard applies to bolting products manufactured for both inch-pound and SI units, allowing versatility across global industries. The guidance established is designed in line with the World Trade Organization's principles for developing international standards, ensuring broad recognition and compliance.

Key Topics

  • Material Requirements

    • The standard applies to precipitation-hardened nickel alloy bolting (UNS N07718), ideal for high temperature and corrosive environments.
    • Alloy must be multiple-melted by consumable electrode remelting or vacuum induction melting, ensuring material uniformity.
  • Heat Treatment

    • Detailed requirements for both solution treatment and precipitation heat treatment are specified, optimizing the mechanical strength and durability.
    • Straightening is permitted after solution treatment but prohibited after aging to maintain structural integrity.
  • Chemical Composition

    • Strict limits for elements such as carbon, manganese, silicon, chromium, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and others.
    • Both remelt ingot analysis and product (check) analysis requirements ensure conformity to prescribed compositions.
  • Mechanical Properties and Testing

    • Mechanical performance evaluated via tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, Brinell hardness testing, and stress rupture testing.
    • Test methods ensure bolting components meet minimum standards essential for high temperature service.
  • Threads and Dimensional Control

    • Threads must be formed by rolling after oxide removal and prior to aging, assuring fatigue resistance and dimensional accuracy.
    • Dimensional and tolerance requirements align with ASTM and ASME standards.
  • Metallography

    • Microstructure and macrostructure analysis ensures grain size and flow line integrity, preventing material defects like freckles and Laves phases.
  • Certification and Marking

    • Products must be marked for traceability and supplied with certification detailing heat treatment cycles and relevant test results.

Applications

Bolting materials and components conforming to ASTM A1014/A1014M are used primarily in:

  • Power Generation: Turbines and auxiliary equipment requiring high mechanical stability at elevated temperatures.
  • Petrochemical and Chemical Processing: Pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and piping systems where corrosion resistance and strength are critical.
  • Aerospace: Jet engines, gas turbines, and other systems subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations.
  • Industrial Furnaces: Securing assemblies exposed to high heat cycles.

The specification's focus on nickel alloy UNS N07718 (Inconel 718) ensures suitability in applications where both high strength and corrosion resistance are essential, supporting operational safety and longevity.

Related Standards

  • ASTM A962/A962M: Common requirements for bolting intended for use at any temperature from cryogenic to the creep range, providing general guidelines referenced by A1014.
  • ASTM B637: Specification for precipitation-hardening and cold-worked nickel alloy bars, forgings, and forging stock for moderate or high temperature service.
  • ASTM B880: General requirements for chemical check analysis limits for nickel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys.
  • ASME B1.1: Unified Inch Screw Threads standard for consistent thread form and dimensions.
  • SAE AS 7467: Specification for bolts and screws made from nickel alloy UNS N07718, with defined tensile strength and stress rupture properties.

By adhering to ASTM A1014/A1014M-16(2021), manufacturers and engineers ensure that precipitation-hardened bolting used in critical high temperature service applications meets the demands for performance, reliability, and international compliance.
