The pipe shall be made from flat-rolled stock by an automatic welding process with no addition of filler metal. The material shall be subjected to heat treatment, and its composition shall conform to the chemical requirements for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, columbium, niobium, tantalum, nitrogen, and iron. The material shall conform to the mechanical property requirements for tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The pipe shall be tested using the following: flattening test, nondestructive test requirements, and transverse guided bend test.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification2 covers welded UNS N08020 alloy pipe for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service.
1.2 The pipe covered is nominal pipe sizes up to and including NPS 6 [168 mm] with the nominal wall thicknesses given as Schedules 5S, 10S, and 40S and nominal pipe sizes up to and including NPS 2 [60 mm] also including Schedule 80S. Table 2 of Specification B775 is based on Table A1 of ANSI B36.19 and gives the nominal dimensions of these sizes. Table 3 of Specification B775 lists the dimensional requirements of these sizes. Pipe having other dimensions may be furnished provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification.
1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to become familiar with all hazards including those identified in the appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this product/material as provided by the manufacturer, to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices, and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM B464/B464M-15(2020): Standard Specification for Welded UNS N08020 Alloy Pipe defines the requirements for welded pipe made from UNS N08020 and related corrosion-resistant alloys. Developed by ASTM International, this standard covers pipe used in applications requiring resistance to corrosion in both low- and high-temperature environments. The specification ensures that pipes meet critical mechanical, chemical, and dimensional properties, making it a reliable choice for industries where durability, resistance to aggressive chemicals, and operational safety are essential.

ASTM B464/B464M applies to welded pipe up to NPS 6 (168 mm) in size, with recognized wall thickness schedules. The standard mandates automatic welding without filler metal, followed by heat treatment to achieve the specified mechanical properties. This document aligns with international standards frameworks to support global trade and consistent quality.

Key Topics

  • Materials Covered: Welded UNS N08020, N08024, and N08026 alloy pipe.
  • Manufacturing Requirements:
    • Produced from flat-rolled stock using an automatic welding process with no filler metal added.
    • Pipes must undergo a heat treatment (stabilized annealing) to ensure corrosion resistance and mechanical integrity.
  • Chemical Composition: Strict limits on elements such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, columbium (niobium plus tantalum), and iron.
  • Mechanical Properties:
    • Minimum tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation requirements.
    • Stability verified through standardized material tests.
  • Testing Methods:
    • Each lot is tested using flattening tests, nondestructive tests (such as pressure or electrical methods), and optionally, transverse guided bend tests.
  • Ordering Information:
    • Specifies requirements including quantity, UNS number, size and schedule, length, certification needs, and supplementary requirements (e.g., corrosion tests according to ASTM A262 if required).
  • Dimensional Coverage: Nominal pipe sizes up to NPS 6 (168 mm) and schedules 5S, 10S, 40S, and up to NPS 2 (60 mm) including Schedule 80S.
  • Safety and Compliance: Users must understand and follow safety, health, and environmental guidelines as detailed in material SDS.

Applications

ASTM B464/B464M welded UNS N08020 alloy pipe is widely used in industries requiring strong resistance to corrosion and the ability to withstand both low and high temperatures. Common application areas include:

  • Chemical Processing: For piping systems handling acids, chlorides, sulfur compounds, and other corrosive agents.
  • Petrochemical Industry: Used in refineries and plants where aggressive process streams are common.
  • Power Generation: Suitable for use in heat exchangers, condensers, and boiler feed systems.
  • Pharmaceutical and Food Processing: Ideal where cleanliness and resistance to acidic or caustic agents are crucial.
  • Desalination Plants: Performs well in environments exposed to saltwater and brine solutions.

Its robust properties ensure that pipelines maintain integrity under harsh service conditions, reducing maintenance and improving operational reliability.

Related Standards

When implementing ASTM B464/B464M-15(2020), reference to the following standards may be necessary:

  • ASTM B775 - General requirements for nickel and nickel alloy welded pipe.
  • ASTM A262 - Practices for detecting susceptibility to intergranular attack in austenitic stainless steels (relevant for optional corrosion testing).
