Overview
ASTM D7976-14(2020): Standard Specification for Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) sets out the requirements and testing methods for purified terephthalic acid intended for use in polymer manufacturing. This specification is critical for ensuring the quality of PTA used in the production of polyesters, such as fibers, filaments, yarns, films, coatings, bottles, and resins. The standard is maintained by ASTM Committee D16 on Aromatic, Industrial, Specialty, and Related Chemicals and is in alignment with internationally recognized principles on standardization as established by the World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Key Topics
Material Purity: The specification details acceptable limits for impurities, including 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA) and p-toluic acid (p-TOL), which are critical for performance in end-use applications.
- 4-CBA maximum content: 25 mg/kg
- Combined 4-CBA and p-TOL maximum: 190 mg/kg
Test Methods: The standard references multiple ASTM test methods for determining impurity levels, such as capillary electrophoresis and high-performance liquid chromatography, ensuring reliable and consistent results across laboratories.
Sampling Procedures: Guidelines for representative sampling are included, referencing ASTM E300 Practice for Sampling Industrial Chemicals, to maintain quality assurance throughout the supply chain.
Rounding and Units: For compliance assessment, observed or calculated values must be rounded following ASTM Practice E29, and all requirements are stated exclusively in SI units for consistency.
Responsibility and Safety: Users are reminded to observe all relevant OSHA regulations, consult up-to-date Safety Data Sheets, and establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices.
Applications
The ASTM D7976-14(2020) standard is widely referenced in various sectors that rely on high-purity PTA, including:
- Polyester Manufacturing: PTA is a key raw material for the production of polyesters, which are subsequently used in fibers for textiles and industrial applications.
- Packaging Materials: Quality PTA is essential for manufacturing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and containers that require high clarity and strength.
- Engineering Resins: PTA specified under this standard ensures resins meet tight mechanical and chemical resistance parameters.
- Specialty Films and Coatings: The standard supports the production of polyester films and coatings with precise performance characteristics, vital in electronics, imaging, and packaging industries.
Consistent application of this standard helps manufacturers assure their customers of product purity and compliance with industry expectations, supporting both local and international trade.
Related Standards
- ASTM D7881, D7882, D7883, D7884: Test methods for determining 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and p-toluic acid content in purified terephthalic acid.
- ASTM E29: Practice for using significant digits in test data to determine conformance with specifications.
- ASTM E300: Practice for sampling industrial chemicals.
- OSHA Regulations (CFR 29, 1910.1000, 1910.1200): Safety and regulatory guidelines relevant to the handling and use of PTA and related chemicals.
Adhering to ASTM D7976-14(2020) helps ensure that purified terephthalic acid meets rigorous performance standards, fosters safe manufacturing practices, and aligns with global market requirements. This makes the specification an essential reference for manufacturers, suppliers, and users throughout the polyester supply chain.
