This document provides guidance to select a vibration generator that will be used to evaluate frequency responses of a test structure or to study how vibration grows/decreases along the structure. These structural dynamics tests can be carried out under field or laboratory conditions (see the ISO 7626 or ISO 10846[4][5][6][7] series). This document describes the selection procedure in terms of the force developed by a single vibration generator. Meanwhile, to move massive structures such as dams or bridges, an assembly of vibration generators is usually applied. Properly phased generators produce in total the same force as calculated for a single vibration generator (see 6.2.6). Guidance also can be applied for the selection of equipment to be used for modal testing to determine natural frequencies, modal shapes and damping in a structure; however, for such a test, more factors than covered by this document usually need to be considered. ISO 8568:2007 specifies performance parameters and methods of inspection of mechanical shock-testing machines and gives guidelines for describing their characteristics. It is intended to ensure that the potential user of a particular shock-testing machine is provided with an adequate description of the characteristics of the machine, and also to give guidance on the selection of such machines. ISO 8568:2007 is applicable to the shock-testing machines that are used for demonstrating or evaluating the effect of shock conditions representative of the service environment and also for diagnostic testing. The purpose of the shock test is to reveal mechanical weakness and/or degradation in specified performance. It can also be used to determine the structural integrity of a test specimen or as a means of quality control. Machines used for simulation of earthquakes, sonic booms, explosions and implosions, bursting tests, metalworking, forming, etc. are not covered in ISO 8568:2007.

ISO 5344:2004 specifies the performance characteristics and performance test conditions for electrodynamic vibration generator systems and provides a list of additional equipment characteristics that can be declared by the equipment manufacturer. This information can be used by the user or the writer of specifications for equipment for the selection of such a system, taking into account its application. ISO 5344:2004 establishes procedures for calculating the system performance of a system comprising an amplifier from one source and a vibrator from a different source. Such a calculated system performance is less precise than performance measured on a system comprising the actual vibrator and amplifier, and a reserve of calculated force is recommended. It can be desirable to specify separately the acquisition of needed vibrator and/or amplifier interface data, particularly if a vibrator or amplifier is to be acquired to add to an existing installation. It can also be desirable to specify the responsibility for the calculation of performance. ISO 5344:2004 is applicable to equipment producing sine, random and impulse rectilinear vibration. It is implied that all systems are usable for sine testing at least at a low level, since sine capability is needed for specimen response evaluation and transfer function measurements for random and impulse testing. When random capability is specified, it is implied that some sine capability is also available. Similarly, when impulse capability is specified, it is implied that some sine, but not necessarily random, capability is available.
