Frequently Asked Questions
MT 61360-1 is a Technical Committee within the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is named "TC 3/SC 3D/MT 61360-1". This committee has published 2 standards.
MT 61360-1 develops IEC standards in the area of Information technology. Currently, there are 2 published standards from this technical committee.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the world's leading organization for the preparation and publication of international standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies. Founded in 1906, the IEC provides a global platform for companies, industries, and governments to meet, discuss, and develop the international standards they require.
A Technical Committee (TC) in IEC is a group of experts responsible for developing international standards in a specific technical area. TCs are composed of national member body delegates and work through consensus to create standards that meet global industry needs. Each TC may have subcommittees (SCs) and working groups (WGs) for specialized topics.
IEC 61360-1:2017 specifies principles for the definition of the properties and associated attributes and explains the methods for representing verbally defined concepts with appropriate data constructs available from IEC 61360-2. It also specifies principles for establishing a hierarchy of classification from a collection of classes, each of which represents a technical concept in the electrotechnical domain or a domain related to electrotechnology. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- support of advanced constructs such as
· conditions and constraints,
· blocks,
· cardinality,
· polymorphism,
· generic and restricted enumerations, and
· mapping;
- extended list of data types;
- harmonization with IEC 62656-1;
- support of IEC TS 62720 and of coded units;
- harmonization of semantic and administrative data among the various information objects;
- use of UML for data modelling;
- enhanced definitions and descriptions;
- introduction of examples of higher level constructs such as block, cardinality, or polymorphism as guidance for the user of the IEC 61360 series.
IEC 61360-4, IEC reference collection of standard data element types and component classes, can be accessed from IEC CDD (Common Data Dictionary) Free access to Database. The database contains the IEC reference collection of classes and associated characteristic properties (data element types or DETs) of electric/electronic components including materials, geometry and features used in electrotechnical equipment and systems. The dictionary and database follow the methodology of Part 1 of IEC 61360 and the information model of Part 2.
IEC 61360-1:2017 has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.

IEC 61360-1:2009 provides a firm basis for the clear and unambiguous definition of characteristic properties (data element types) of all elements of electrotechnical systems from basic components to sub-assemblies and full systems. The principles and methods of this standard may be used in areas outside the original conception such as assemblies of components and electrotechnical systems and subsystems. In addition, this standard provides for establishing a classification hierarchy and the allocation of applicable and relevant properties to each of the classes so established in order to describe fully the characteristics of objects belonging to that class. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- extended administrative data for status and source of content;
- support of multiple language variants for data element types and classes;
- support for multiple alternative units for data element types;
- improved conventions for definition writing based on ISO 704 and ISO/IEC 11179-4;
- enhanced definitions and descriptions.
It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
