Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products - Specifications for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives - Part 7: High chromium white cast iron grit (ISO 11124-7:2025)

This document specifies requirements for high chromium white cast iron grit, as supplied for blast-cleaning processes. It specifies ranges of particle sizes, together with corresponding grade designations. Values are specified for hardness, density, defect/structural requirements, metallographic structure and chemical composition.
The requirements specified in this document apply to abrasives supplied in the new condition only. They do not apply to abrasives either during or after use.
High chromium white cast iron grits are used in both static and site blasting equipment. They are most often selected where there is a possibility for the recovery and re-use of the abrasive.
NOTE 1 Although this document has been developed for preparation of steelwork, these materials are predominantly used for non-ferrous substrates. The properties specified will generally be appropriate for use when preparing other material surfaces, or components, using blast-cleaning techniques, and can be used for applications where no subsequent coating is applied.
NOTE 2 Whenever dissimilar metals are used together, galvanic corrosion can occur.

Overview

prEN ISO 11124-7 (ISO 11124-7:2025) defines specifications for high chromium white cast iron grit used as a metallic blast-cleaning abrasive. The standard covers the properties and supply requirements for these abrasives in their new condition, including particle size grading, hardness, density, metallographic structure, chemical composition and limits on defects, foreign matter and moisture. It is intended for use in both static and site blasting equipment and is commonly selected where recovery and re‑use of the abrasive is possible.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Designation and grading: Abrasives are designated “Abrasive ISO 11124 M/HCCI/Gxxx” with a 3‑digit grade code denoting nominal particle size (mm × 100) and a stated hardness range (e.g., Abrasive ISO 11124 M/HCCI/G118/500-850 HV).
  • Particle size distribution: Grades (G004 … G170) are defined by cumulative percent retained on standard sieves; screening specs are given in Table 1.
  • Hardness: Standard hardness range is 500 HV to 850 HV; 90% of tested particles must fall within the specified hardness. Special hardness ranges can be agreed with a minimum tolerance.
  • Apparent density: Minimum 7.0 g/cm3 (7,0 × 10^3 kg/m3).
  • Microstructure: High chromium white cast iron microstructure with chromium carbides in martensitic and/or austenitic matrix; max 15% undesirable microstructure among tested particles.
  • Defects and foreign matter: Limits on shot content, cracks and total defects (see Table 2); foreign matter max 1% by mass.
  • Chemical composition: Carbon 1.5–3.5% mass fraction; Chromium 25–35%; Silicon ≤4%; Manganese ≤2%.
  • Moisture: Maximum 0.2% mass fraction.
  • Sampling and test methods: Referenced to the ISO 11125 series (Parts 1–7) and analytical methods ISO 439, ISO 629, ISO 9556, ISO 10138.
  • Traceability and marking: Full product coding, batch/lot identification and packaging labelling are required for lot traceability.

Applications and users

  • Primary use: Blast-cleaning and surface preparation where abrasive recovery/re‑use is practiced; often used on non‑ferrous substrates despite being developed for steel.
  • Who uses this standard:
    • Abrasive manufacturers and suppliers (product specification, labelling)
    • Blasting contractors and site engineers (selection of grade/hardness)
    • Coating specifiers, asset owners and QA/QC laboratories (acceptance testing, inspection)
    • Procurement teams requiring traceability and test reports
  • Practical notes: Store indoors in dry conditions to prevent condensation; be aware of galvanic corrosion risks when dissimilar metals are combined.
