This European Standard specifies the characteristics of spherical plain bearings, metal to metal, in corrosion resisting steel, cadmium plated and chromated, wide series, inch series for aerospace applications.
They are intended for use in fixed or moving parts of the aircraft structure and their control mechanisms.
They need to be used in the temperature range 54 °C to 150 °C, as they are lubricated by means of the following greases:
- Code A: Grease as per MIL-PRF-23827C, operating temperature range 73 °C to 121 °C;
- Code B: Grease as per MIL-PRF-81322G, operating temperature range 54 °C to 177 °C.
The range of application for bearings lubricated with grease per code A is limited to 121 °C.
In both cases the spherical surface of the outer or inner ring needs to be provided with a dry-film lubricant as per MIL-PRF-46010G or equivalent (anti-seizing protection).
The slide hole treatment either at the outer ring or inner ring.

Code A : Graisse suivant la MIL-PRF-23827C, plage de température d'utilisation de 73 °C à 121 °C ;

Overview
EN 4266:2013 is a European aerospace standard specifying spherical plain bearings (metal-to-metal) made from corrosion-resisting steel, cadmium plated and chromated, in the wide inch series for aircraft structural and control-system use. It defines dimensions, tolerances, materials, surface treatments, loads and clearances for bearings intended to operate in the temperature range −54 °C to 150 °C, with lubrication and anti-seize requirements appropriate to aerospace applications.
Key topics and requirements
- Bearing type & series: Aerospace series spherical plain bearings, metal-to-metal, wide series - inch units.
- Materials & hardness:
- Inner ring: corrosion-resisting steel per prEN 2030, hardness ~55–62 HRC.
- Outer ring: steel per EN 3161, hardness ~28–38 HRC (before swaging).
- Surface treatment:
- Cadmium plating on outer ring: 5–8 µm, followed by chromating (EN 2133).
- Inner/outer ring treatments per ISO 8075 where applicable.
- Lubrication & anti-seize:
- Grease Code A: MIL‑PRF‑23827C (operating −73 °C to 121 °C) - use limited to ≤121 °C.
- Grease Code B: MIL‑PRF‑81322G (operating −54 °C to 177 °C).
- Spherical surface must have a dry-film lubricant per MIL‑PRF‑46010G (or equivalent) for anti-seizing.
- Operating temperature: −54 °C to 150 °C (subject to grease code limits).
- Dimensions & tolerances: Detailed tables and figures specify bore/outer diameters, clearances (normal N, reduced P), tilt angle α, and mass per diameter code.
- Loads: Permissible static and ultimate static radial and axial loads are given by diameter and lubrication/feature codes; push-out loads and bolt bending limits are identified.
- Variants & features: Options include swaging groove codes (R/S), grease-hole and groove codes (E/F/G), and designation/marking rules (EN 2424).
Applications and users
- Typical uses: aircraft structural joints, control linkages, hinges and moving flight-control elements where a metal-to-metal spherical bearing is required.
- Primary users:
- Aircraft designers and structural engineers specifying hardware
- Aerospace component manufacturers and heat‑treat/platers
- Procurement and quality assurance teams ensuring component conformity
- Maintenance and repair organizations selecting replacement bearings per spec
