Overview

EN 3832:2004 is a CEN aerospace standard that defines double hexagon‑head bolts with relieved shank and long thread manufactured from the heat‑resisting nickel‑base alloy NI‑PH2601 (Inconel 718). The standard is intended for high‑performance aerospace fasteners and specifies mechanical classification 1 550 MPa (at ambient temperature) with suitability up to 650 °C. EN 3832:2004 covers geometry, material, marking and the technical relationships needed to ensure interchangeability and performance for aerospace applications.

Key topics and requirements

  • Configuration, dimensions and tolerances: Detailed geometrical requirements are given (Figure 1, Tables 1 and 2); dimensions are in millimetres and masses are listed per 1 000 parts.
  • Material and heat treatment: Material references are EN 3666 and EN 2952 for NI‑PH2601 (Inconel 718) bars for forged fasteners. Final heat treatment shall conform to EN 3666 (solution treated and cold worked) to achieve the required mechanical properties.
  • Mechanical classification: Minimum tensile strength 1 550 MPa at ambient temperature; parts are qualified for use up to 650 °C (maximum test temperature).
  • Threads and drives:
    • MJ thread limit dimensions referenced to ISO 5855‑2.
    • Lead/runout and rolled external threads referenced to ISO 3353‑1.
    • Bihexagonal wrenching configuration conforms to ISO 4095.
  • Marking and designation:
    • Marking follows EN 2424 (style A) as shown in the standard.
    • Example designation format: BOLT EN3832-080060 (with optional code I9005 if required).
  • Technical specification cross‑reference: Technical testing and additional requirements are referenced to EN 3833.

Practical applications

EN 3832 bolts are used where high strength and high temperature resistance are required in aerospace structures and assemblies - for example in hot‑section components, engine assemblies and other high‑temperature fastener applications in airframes and propulsion systems. Typical uses include replacement parts, new component production and maintenance where certified, high‑temperature nickel‑base fasteners are required.

Who uses this standard

  • Aerospace fastener manufacturers and heat‑treatment shops
  • Aircraft and engine OEMs, design and structural engineers
  • Procurement, quality assurance and certification bodies in aviation
  • Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations
