Electric motor-operated tools - Dust measurement Procedure - Part 1: General requirements

This European Standard specifies general requirements for the dust measurement of electric motor-operated tools supplied from mains or from batteries. This European Standard applies to those tools with and without dust extraction unit where dust such as mineral dust containing silica or wood dust is expected.

Overview

EN 50632-1:2015/A1:2019 (CLC) sets the general requirements for dust measurement on electric motor‑operated tools (mains or battery powered). The amendment A1 (2019) updates test practice based on practical trials and applies to tools with or without dust extraction where mineral dust containing silica or wood dust is expected. The standard defines where and how to measure inhalable and respirable dust to produce repeatable, comparable exposure data for product development, compliance and occupational hygiene.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope: Dust measurement for electric motor‑operated tools supplied from mains or batteries; applies to tools both with and without dust extraction units.
  • Test environment: Test room must be large enough to maintain a minimum 2.0 m clearance from walls and to meet the standard’s volume requirement (the test room should otherwise be as empty as possible to avoid spurious surfaces).
  • Sampler placement: Personal dust samplers are carried in the upper chest zone of the operator (or placed to replicate this zone for robotic tests). Number of samplers:
    • Inhalable + respirable measured: two respirable samplers (one each side) and one inhalable sampler below them.
    • Inhalable only: two samplers (one each side).
  • Sampler standards: Dust samplers must comply with EN 13205 (all parts) and sampling fractions per EN 481.
  • Ambient conditions: Tests are conducted at roughly 20 °C and relative humidity ≤ 75%; cooling air outlets and extractor exhaust must not bias samplers.
  • Test repetitions & acceptance: Three tests per operator; results expressed as one concentration per test. The coefficient of variation (C) of the three values must be calculated and C < 0.5 to accept the series.
  • Uncertainty reporting: Uncertainty K is given as K = 1.65 × s, where s is the standard deviation of the series.
  • Electrical measurement: Voltage at the plug or battery terminals must be measured with voltmeters accurate to ±1.5%.

Applications and Users

This standard is intended for:

  • Manufacturers of power tools (design, validation, performance claims)
  • Accredited test laboratories performing dust emission and exposure testing
  • Occupational hygienists and safety engineers assessing user exposure to inhalable/respirable dust
  • Developers and testers of dust extraction systems and PPE
  • Regulatory bodies and certification entities requiring standardized emission data

Related Standards

  • EN 50632-1:2015 (original)
  • EN 13205 (sampling equipment)
  • EN 481 (dust fraction definitions)

Using EN 50632-1:2015/A1:2019 supports consistent, reproducible dust measurement for electric tools, enabling safer product design, robust extractor verification, and clear exposure assessment.
