Fat and oil derivatives - Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) - Determination of phosphorus content by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectrometry
This European Standard specifies an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectrometry method for the determination of phosphorus content between 4 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg in Fatty Acid Methyl Esters, hereinafter referred as FAME.
This method aims to evaluate the FAME quality, in terms of transesterification by-products content such as phosphorus, whose concentration may affect the fuel behaviour.
WARNING - The use of this method may involve hazardous equipment, materials and operations. This method does not purport to address to all of the safety problems associated with its use, but it is the responsibility of the user to search and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Overview
EN 14107:2003 (CEN) specifies an analytical method for the determination of phosphorus in Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectrometry. The method covers phosphorus content in the range 4 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg and is intended to evaluate FAME quality by measuring transesterification by‑products (residual phosphorus from phospholipids) that can affect fuel behaviour. The standard includes sample preparation, calibration, measurement and performance criteria.
Keywords: EN 14107:2003, FAME analysis, phosphorus content, ICP emission spectrometry, biodiesel quality, transesterification by‑products.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and detection range: Phosphorus determination in FAME between 4–20 mg/kg.
- Analytical principle: Samples and standards are nebulised into an argon ICP and phosphorus emission is measured (commonly at 213.6 nm or 178.3 nm).
- Sample preparation: Weigh ~2.5 g sample, dilute at least 10× with xylene (polypropylene/disposable pipettes to avoid contamination). Use a stock oil addition to standards to match viscosity with samples.
- Standards and calibration: Calibration solutions typically prepared at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 mg/L (based on an intermediate 100 mg/L intermediate solution); linear regression to build calibration curve.
- Calculation: Convert measured concentration (c, mg/L) to sample phosphorus (C, mg/kg) using C = c · V / m (V = solution volume in mL, m = sample mass in g).
- Precision criteria: Repeatability-absolute difference not greater than 0.6 mg/kg (more than once out of 20). Reproducibility given by R = 0.192·C + 0.025. Interlaboratory data are provided in informative annex A.
- Apparatus & reagents: ICP spectrometer with quartz torch and nebulizer, peristaltic pump (0.5–3 mL/min), xylene solvent, phosphorus organic standards and stabilizer. Special glassware washing (HCl rinse) to avoid phosphate contamination.
- Safety: Method involves hazardous solvents (xylene) and high‑energy plasma equipment - users must follow lab safety and regulatory requirements.
Practical applications and users
- Quality control laboratories in biodiesel and FAME production assessing residual phosphorus that can harm catalysts, engine components or fuel injection systems.
- Fuel suppliers and blending facilities verifying FAME feedstocks and finished fuels.
- Certification and regulatory bodies evaluating compliance of FAME batches.
- R&D and analytical service providers developing process optimization and troubleshooting transesterification.

- EN ISO 5555 - Sampling for fats and oils (recommended sampling method).
- EN ISO 4259 - Application of precision data (used for interlaboratory statistics).
Note: The method may require instrument vendor‑specific parameter adjustments; always follow manufacturer guidance for organic solvent operation and ensure appropriate safety measures.
