Overview

The oSIST prEN ISO 8673:2022 standard titled "Hexagon regular nuts (style 1), with fine pitch thread - Product grades A and B" delineates specifications for hexagonal nuts featuring fine pitch metric threads ranging from 8 mm to 39 mm. Published by CEN and aligned with ISO technical committee ISO/TC 2/SC 12, this draft international standard governs both steel and stainless steel nuts used extensively in mechanical fastener assemblies. The standard ensures consistency in manufacturing, quality, and performance, offering product grades A and B tailored for various industrial applications.

Key Topics

  • Dimensions and Thread Specifications
The standard defines precise measurements for nuts from 8 mm up to 39 mm diameter, including optional washer-face designs. All dimensions comply with ISO 225 symbols and descriptions, ensuring a uniform understanding of nut geometry and thread profiles.

  • Material and Property Classes
Steel nuts can be quenched and tempered per ISO 898-2 with property classes such as 6, 8, 10, and 12. Stainless steel variants correspond to ISO 3506-2 grades like A2-70 and A4-80, encompassing enhanced corrosion resistance for demanding environments.

  • Product Grades and Tolerances
Two product grades, A and B, define the level of manufacturing precision. Tolerances are specified in accordance with ISO 4759-1 for dimensional accuracy and ISO 965-1 for thread class 6H tolerances, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability.

  • Coatings and Finishes
Surface treatments include electroplated coatings compliant with ISO 4042 and zinc flake coatings as per ISO 10683, providing improved corrosion resistance and performance. Nuts can also be supplied in an "as processed" or passivated condition depending on application requirements.

  • Marking and Labelling
Mandatory marking adheres to ISO 898-2 for steel and ISO 3506-2 for stainless steel nuts, facilitating product traceability. Packaging labels incorporate critical data such as thread size, property class, finish type, manufacturer identification, lot number, and quantity to support quality control.

  • Designations and Identification
The standard specifies designation protocols per ISO 8991, enabling clear identification of nut size, thread pitch, product grade, and material class. For example, a 12 mm nut with a 1.5 mm fine thread and a property class of 10 is denoted as:
    Hexagon regular nut ISO 8673 – M12×1,5 – 10

  • Annex for Larger Sizes
Nuts exceeding 39 mm diameter are documented in an informative annex; however, these do not conform to ISO 898-2 mechanical property specifications and are discouraged for new designs.

Applications

Hexagon regular nuts with fine pitch threads are indispensable components across multiple engineering sectors:

  • Automotive and Aerospace
Where precise thread engagement and vibration resistance are critical.

  • Machinery and Heavy Equipment
Offering high-strength fastening solutions with reliable dimensional consistency.

  • Corrosion-Resistant Assemblies
Stainless steel nuts are utilized in marine, chemical, and food processing industries requiring durability against harsh environments.

  • Precision Engineering
Fine pitch threads enable fine adjustment and tight fastening in instrumentation and high-precision equipment.

Adopting ISO 8673 nuts assures enhanced reliability, international interchangeability, and compliance with stringent safety and quality standards.
