Overview

SIST EN 4033:2009 is a European aerospace standard published by CEN that specifies the dimensions, loads, and characteristics of rigid single row ball bearings used in airframe rolling applications. These bearings are made of corrosion resisting steel and belong to diameter series 8 and 9 with reduced internal radial clearance. Designed specifically for slow rotations and oscillations under load, the bearings are intended for installation between fixed and moving parts of an aircraft’s structural and control mechanisms. They operate effectively within a temperature range of –54 °C to 150 °C depending on the lubricant used, ensuring durability and reliability in demanding aerospace environments.

Key Topics

Bearing Characteristics

  • Type: Rigid single row ball bearings
  • Material: Corrosion resisting steel grades EN 2030 or EN 2226, hardened to ≥58 HRC
  • Diameter Series: 8 and 9
  • Internal Clearance: Reduced radial clearance to improve precision
  • Temperature Range: −54 °C to 150 °C (dependent on grease lubrication)

Lubrication Requirements

  • Grease Type A: Very high pressure ester type (operational range −73 °C to 121 °C)
  • Grease Type B: Very high pressure synthetic hydrocarbons, general purpose (operational range −54 °C to 177 °C)
  • Lubrication impacts the allowable temperature for bearing operation

Design & Load Specifications

  • Bearings designed for slow rotational or oscillatory movement under load
  • Permissible static axial and radial loads detailed for various diameter codes
  • Maximum starting torques and runout tolerances defined for consistency and performance
  • Surface roughness and treatment requirements ensure smooth operation and corrosion resistance

Marking and Identification

  • Standardized marking per EN 2424 Style A for traceability
  • Designation codes specify grease type, diameter, sealing, and surface treatments
  • Shields or seals are optional and affect bearing application details

Applications

SIST EN 4033:2009 bearings are crucial components in aerospace engineering where reliability, precision, and corrosion resistance are mandatory. Their specific design and construction make them ideal for:

  • Airframe structures requiring reliable rolling elements between fixed and moving parts
  • Aircraft control mechanisms where slow rotational or oscillating motions occur under load
  • Environments exposed to temperature extremes and corrosive elements typical in aerospace use
  • Applications requiring compliance with stringent aerospace component standards to ensure safety and performance

These bearings support the longevity and functional integrity of aircraft systems, contributing to overall safety and operational efficiency.

Related Standards

SIST EN 4033:2009 references and aligns with several other important aerospace and bearing standards including:

  • EN 3280: Aerospace series - Bearings, airframe rolling - Technical specifications
  • ISO 15: Rolling bearings - Boundary dimensions, general plan
  • ISO 1132-1: Rolling bearings - Tolerances - Terms and definitions
