Overview
EN 60335-2-27:2013/A1:2020 (CENELEC) specifies safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances designed for skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation. It covers appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V single‑phase and 480 V for other supplies, and addresses use in dwellings and similar non‑expert environments (shops, hotels, farms, light industry). The amendment A1 updates definitions, test limits and adds requirements for software-controlled functions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Definitions and spectral ranges
- UV emitter: radiating source emitting electromagnetic energy between 200 nm and 400 nm.
- Infrared emitter: radiating source emitting between 780 nm and 1 mm.
- Irradiance limits and measurement
- Effective irradiance is weighted according to the erythema action spectrum (Figure 103) to assess skin‑erythema risk.
- The standard sets different irradiance limits for household and commercial appliances (commercial limit explicitly referenced as 0.7 W/m², weighted).
- Annexes provide detailed classification of UV appliance types and regional/national irradiance limits.
- Construction and safety features
- Appliances inclined >35° must automatically stop UV emission if the timer fails; emissions must cease before exposure exceeds 110% of the set time.
- UV filters must be designed so that removing a filter does not increase UV emission.
- Appliances that can be locked from the inside must allow external access for safety; additional provisions for commercial units that fully surround a person.
- Requirements to prevent ejection/contact of glass fragments from broken high‑pressure metal halide lamps.
- Software and electronic controls
- Annex R (normative) specifies software evaluation requirements: programmable electronics must detect/control fault/error conditions so that safety (timing, filter operation, emission stop) is not impaired.
- Marking, instructions and tests
- Detailed marking and user instruction requirements; specific abnormal‑operation and test procedures are provided.
Applications and users
This standard is used by:
- Manufacturers and designers of tanning, phototherapy, cosmetic and medical skin‑exposure devices
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Product safety engineers and compliance teams ensuring conformity with the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU)
- Regulatory authorities and purchasers specifying safety for household and commercial skin‑exposure equipment
Related standards
- IEC 60335‑1 (General requirements for household appliance safety) - used together with this Part 2.
- National/regional limits referenced in Annex EE and other legislation applicable to UV/IR devices.

Directive 2014/35/EU [2014 OJ L96] aimed to be covered
This European Standard has been prepared under a Commission’s standardization request relating to
harmonized standards in the field of the Low Voltage Directive, M/511, to provide one voluntary means
of conforming to safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU of the European Parliament and of the
Council of 26 February 2014 on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to the
making available on the market of electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits
[2014 OJ L96].
Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union under that Directive,
compliance with the normative clauses of this standard given in Table ZZA.1 confers, within the limits
of the scope of this standard, a presumption of conformity with the corresponding safety objectives of
that Directive, and associated EFTA regulations.
Compliance with this Part 2 when used together with the Part 1 provides one means of conformity with
the safety objectives.
