Overview

The SIST EN 60455-3-1:2004 standard, developed by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), specifies the requirements for unfilled epoxy resinous compounds used in electrical insulation. This standard forms part of a series dedicated to resin-based reactive compounds utilized as electrical insulators, focusing specifically on unfilled epoxy materials in their cured form. It covers classes from EP-U-1 to EP-U-7, ensuring consistent quality and performance criteria across applications. This standard supersedes earlier versions and aligns with the related IEC 60455-3-1:2003 international publication.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Materials
SIST EN 60455-3-1:2004 addresses unfilled epoxy resinous compounds used for electrical insulation, describing clear technical specifications for their cured state.

  • Material Classes EP-U-1 to EP-U-7
The standard defines seven classes of unfilled epoxy compounds, each with distinct mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties tailored to various performance needs.

  • Physical and Mechanical Properties
    Key parameters include:

    • Density: Range from 1.1 to 1.3 g/cm³ depending on class.
    • Flexural and Tensile Strength: Minimum strength criteria ensure durability under mechanical stress.
    • Impact Strength: Specification for resistance to impact forces.
    • Thermal Expansion: Limits on linear thermal expansion to guarantee dimensional stability.
  • Thermal Characteristics

    • Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) and Deflection Temperature under Load specify the thermal endurance of the materials.
    • Thermal Endurance Tests assess retention of mechanical strength and mass stability under elevated temperatures.
  • Electrical Properties

    • Volume Resistivity and Dielectric Loss Factor optimized for electrical insulation efficiency.
    • Electric Strength: Minimum voltage breakdown thresholds to prevent dielectric failure.
    • Tracking Resistance: Measures material resistance to carbon tracking under electrical stress.
  • Additional Testing Methods
Referenced to EN 60455-2:1999 for standardized test methods including density, viscosity, epoxy equivalent, shelf life, pot life, and exothermic temperature peak.

Applications

The SIST EN 60455-3-1:2004 standard ensures that unfilled epoxy resin compounds meet stringent requirements for use in a variety of electrical insulation contexts, such as:

  • Electrical Transformers
Epoxy resins provide essential insulation for coils, bushings, and other components, ensuring long-term reliability and safety.

  • Motors and Generators
Unfilled epoxy compounds protect windings and components from electrical, mechanical, and thermal stresses.

  • Electronic Devices
Used in potting and encapsulation for circuit boards and semiconductor devices, enhancing durability and electrical insulation.

  • Insulating Components
Manufacturing of insulators, printed circuit boards (PCBs), and other critical parts requiring enhanced dielectric properties and mechanical strength.

  • High-Temperature Environments
Classes EP-U-1 to EP-U-7 offer tailored solutions for applications exposed to varying thermal conditions, from moderate to high-temperature operations.

Related Standards

This standard is closely linked with other parts of the IEC 60455 series and several related international publications:

  • IEC 60455-1: Definitions and general requirements for resin-based reactive compounds used in electrical insulation.
  • IEC 60455-2 (EN 60455-2:1999): Test methods for resin-based reactive compounds, referenced extensively for material verification.
  • EN 60455-3 (Part 3): Specifies other individual materials and formulations in the resin-based compound series.
  • Additional electrotechnical standards related to insulating materials and electrical safety.

Summary

SIST EN 60455-3-1:2004 provides comprehensive specifications for unfilled epoxy resinous compounds used in electrical insulation applications. This standard ensures materials meet mechanical, thermal, and electrical performance criteria, supporting the development of reliable and safe electrical components. It is essential for manufacturers, designers, and testing laboratories involved in producing or certifying electrical insulation materials aligned with international and European market requirements.
