Optical fibres - Part 1-51: Measurement methods and test procedures - Dry heat (steady state) tests

IEC 60793-1-51:2014 provides a practical method for evaluating fibre performance in a defined environment. The purpose of this standard is to determine the suitability of optical fibre sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres to withstand the environmental condition of high temperature (dry heat) which may occur in actual use, storage and/or transport. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation of effects of high temperature over a given period. This procedure is conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-2, Test Bd. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 2001, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:  - harmonizing the content with sectional specifications of relevant fibre types;  - extending the applicability of the document to class C single-mode fibres. Keywords: optical fibre sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres, class B and C single-mode fibres, high temperature (dry heat)

Optična vlakna - 1-51. del: Metode merjenja in preskusni postopki - Preskusi suhe toplote (ustaljeno stanje)

Overview

EN 60793-1-51:2014 (IEC 60793-1-51:2014) defines a measurement and test procedure for evaluating optical fibre performance under sustained dry heat. The standard specifies a practical method to determine whether optical fibre sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres can withstand high temperature (dry heat) conditions that may occur during use, storage or transport. This edition harmonizes content with sectional fibre specifications and extends applicability to class C single-mode fibres.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test environment: Conducted in an environmental chamber per IEC 60068-2-2, Test Bd (dry heat, steady state). Chamber must avoid direct radiant heat and may use forced air circulation to ensure homogeneity.
  • Temperature and exposure:+85 °C for 30 days (humidity uncontrolled; recommended ≥ 50 % RH at test start).
  • Specimen length and preparation:
    • Minimum 1 000 m for A1a–A1d multimode fibres.
    • Minimum 2 000 m for class B and C single-mode fibres.
    • Specimens are loosely coiled (horizontal or vertical) with minimum bend diameter 150 mm; dusting (e.g., talcum) is recommended so coils move freely. A control length is removed before the test for baseline mechanical measurements.
  • Temperature change rate: Rate of change must not exceed 1 °C/min, averaged over a maximum period of 5 minutes, during ramp-up and cool-down.
  • Optical measurements: Attenuation shall be measured at wavelengths specified in the relevant product specification using IEC 60793-1-40 methods (insertion loss - Annex B, or backscattering - Annex C) before, during (once stabilized) and after conditioning. Record attenuation changes; other optical tests may be specified by product details.
  • Preconditioning and measurements during conditioning: Per detail specification when required. The standard defines sampling, apparatus and test procedure; pass/fail criteria are given in the applicable product or sectional specification.

Applications and who uses it

  • Quality assurance and type-approval testing by optical fibre manufacturers and independent test laboratories.
  • Product development and reliability assessment for telecommunications, data center interconnects, and other fibre-optic systems subject to elevated temperature during installation, storage or transport.
  • Procurement and compliance verification for spec writers, purchasers and certification bodies who need objective evidence of fibre performance under high-temperature (dry heat) conditions.

Related standards

  • IEC 60068-2-2 - Environmental testing: Test B (Dry heat)
  • IEC 60793-1-40 - Attenuation measurement methods (reference for optical tests)
  • IEC 60793-2-10 - Sectional specification for category A1 multimode fibres
  • IEC 60793-2-50 - Sectional specification for class B single-mode fibres
  • IEC 60793-2-60 - Sectional specification for class C single-mode fibres

This standard is essential when evaluating the resilience of optical fibre sub-category A1a–A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres to prolonged high temperature (dry heat) exposure and for ensuring measurable, repeatable attenuation and mechanical performance under those conditions.
