Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 22: Polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper wire overcoated with polyamide, class 180 (IEC 60317-22:2004/A1:2009)

Amandma A1:2010 je dodatek k standardu SIST EN 60317-22:2005
This part of IEC 60317 specifies the requirements of enamelled round copper winding wire of class 180 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyester or polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The superimposed coating is based on polyamide resin. NOTE A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics. Class 180 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which it is recommended that the wire be operated and this will depend on many factors, including the type of equipment involved.
The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is as follows:
– grade 1: 0,050 mm up to and including 3,150 mm;
– grade 2: 0,050 mm up to and including 5,000 mm;
– grade 3: 0,250 mm up to and including 1,600 mm.
The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317-0-1.

- stopnja 1: od 0,050 mm do vključno 3,150 mm;
- stopnja 2: od 0,050 mm do vključno 5,000 mm;
- stopnja 3: 0,250 mm do vključno 1,600 mm.
Nominalne premere prevodnikov določa klavzula 4 IEC 60317-0-1.

Overview

EN 60317-22:2004/A1:2010 (aligned with IEC 60317-22:2004/A1:2009) specifies requirements for a particular type of magnet (winding) wire: polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper wire overcoated with polyamide, temperature class 180. This European amendment (A1, 2010) updates the original Part 22 requirements and aligns the test clause for pin‑hole inspection with IEC 60317-0-1.

Key topics

  • Material construction: round copper conductor with polyester or polyesterimide enamel insulation and a polyamide overcoat.
  • Temperature class: designated class 180 (suitable for applications requiring thermal endurance at this class).
  • Test and inspection methods: mechanical, electrical and thermal tests described or referenced; Clause 23 (pin‑hole test) is replaced by the procedure in IEC 60317-0-1.
  • Quality and conformity: provisions for sampling, compliance with CENELEC adoption, and harmonized national implementation across member bodies.
  • Standard family context: part of the IEC/EN 60317 series covering particular types of winding wires; this amendment was approved by CENELEC and adopted as a national standard in participating countries.

Applications

  • Motor windings (small and medium motors) where compact insulation and 180 °C class performance are required
  • Transformers, inductors and chokes that demand reliable enamel/polyamide insulated copper wire
  • Relays, solenoids and precision coils used in elevated temperature environments
  • Manufacturers of magnet wire, coil winders, component specifiers, and OEMs selecting insulated wire for high-reliability electrotechnical equipment

Who uses this standard

  • Magnet wire manufacturers (material specification and production control)
  • Design engineers and winding technicians (material selection for thermal class 180)
  • Quality, test and certification laboratories (type and routine testing, pin‑hole checks following IEC 60317-0-1)
  • Procurement and compliance teams that require harmonized European/IEC specifications

Related standards

  • IEC 60317 series (general series for particular types of winding wires)
  • IEC 60317-0-1 (referenced for pin‑hole test procedure and common test methods)
  • CENELEC/CENELEC member national adoptions and related EN/IEC documents
