SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1 for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) interworking. It specifies how ISDN services are mapped over the DECT air interface for end system configuration, so implementers can build interoperable DECT fixed and portable systems that talk to ISDN networks.

This edition implements pending change requests.

What does SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 specify?

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 specifies the interworking behavior for DECT/ISDN end systems. It describes the reference configurations, the protocol architecture, service requirements, and the mappings between DECT and ISDN for signalling and bearer services.

The document is organized into three main clauses and five annexes. Clause 4 sets the interworking requirements, clause 5 gives the mappings, and clause 6 covers support of ISDN bearer services.

AnnexWhat it covers

Annex BLU7 64 kbit/s data bearer service
Annex CConnectionLess Supplementary Service (CLSS) procedure
Annex DInterworking state machine
Annex EBibliography

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003?

Clause 4 sets the service and interface scope

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 defines the end system reference configuration, the ISDN interfaces, and the interfaces supported for a DECT end system. In practice, this tells an implementer where the DECT side stops and the ISDN side starts.

Clause 4 also separates bearer services, teleservices, and supplementary services. That matters because different service types are treated differently in call setup, signalling, and mapping.

Clause 4.3 defines which services are carried and how they are checked

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 covers bearer service requirements, teleservice requirements, and supplementary service requirements. It explicitly discusses 3,1 kHz telephony, 7 kHz telephony, videotelephony, teletex, telefax group 4, videotex, data, and voice band data.

For signalling, the document uses ISDN compatibility information elements such as bearer capability, lower layer compatibility, high layer compatibility, and progress indicator. In practice, this is the part that tells a designer what information must be carried or compared when a call is set up.

Clause 4.3.3 classifies supplementary service protocols

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 uses keypad protocol, feature key management protocol, and functional protocol. Only externally provided supplementary services are covered by this interworking specification.

Clause 4.3.3.4 groups ISDN supplementary services into call control, call independent, hold/retrieve, suspend/resume, user-to-user information, and notification procedures. That helps when deciding whether a service needs normal call control, FACILITY-based signalling, or a dedicated exchange of user information.

Clause 5 maps DECT and ISDN messages and information elements

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 gives detailed mappings for Call Control messages such as SETUP, ALERTING, CONNECT, DISCONNECT, RELEASE, HOLD, RETRIEVE, and many FACILITY-related procedures. It also gives special mappings for supplementary services like CLIP, CLIR, COLP, COLR, MSN, DDI, SUB, TP, CW, HOLD, CUG, AOC, MCID, CONF, 3PTY, CD, UUS1, UUS2, UUS3, ECT, CCBS, FPH, MMC, CFU, CFNR, and CFB.

For implementers, this is the core interoperability content: it says which DECT message or information element corresponds to which ISDN one, and when data must be copied, translated, or ignored.

Clause 5.2.5 and 5.2.6 define the field-by-field translation rules

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 maps numbers, display text, facility data, progress indicators, causes, sending-complete, signal, and IWU-to-IWU elements between the two worlds. Clause 5.2.6 then gives coding mappings for items such as protocol discriminator, transaction identifier, transfer mode, numbering plan, duplex mode, negotiation, and Network Independent Clock (NIC).

In practice, this is what keeps the bit-level encoding consistent across DECT and ISDN equipment.

Clause 5.3, Clause 5.4, and Clause 6 cover lower layers and bearer support

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 includes ISDN layer 2 management for connection-oriented and connectionless transactions, plus U-plane mappings for service activation and de-activation. Clause 6 then links the mappings to support of ISDN bearer services.

Annex A and Annex B are important for data implementations. Annex A adjusts EN 300 175 parts 3, 4, and 5, while Annex B defines LU7 64 kbit/s data bearer service behavior.

What terms does SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 define?

  • Interworking Unit (IWU) - The function that maps DECT procedures, messages, and information elements to their ISDN equivalents.
  • Call Related Supplementary Services (CRSS) - Supplementary services tied to an active call, often carried by call-control procedures or FACILITY-related messages.
  • ConnectionLess Supplementary Service (CLSS) - A supplementary service handled without a normal connection, described in Annex C.
  • Automatic-Repeat-Request (ARQ) - The retransmission mechanism used in LU7 to recover from transmission errors.
  • Forward Error Control (FEC) - The Reed-Solomon coding used in LU7 to detect and correct errors on the radio link.
  • LU7 - The 64 kbit/s data bearer service defined for DECT/ISDN interworking, including buffering, sequence control, ARQ, and FEC.

Who uses SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003?

SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 is used by DECT equipment designers, ISDN interface designers, and system integrators who need DECT and ISDN to interwork at the signalling and bearer-service level. It is also relevant to test engineers and conformance teams because the document is structured to support PICS generation and test case development.

Buyers and quality managers can use it to check whether a product supports the DECT/ISDN services they need, especially for telephony, supplementary services, and 64 kbit/s data transport.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003?

  • EN 300 175 - Provides the DECT Common Interface; the foreword points to parts 1 to 9, and Annex A modifies parts 3, 4, and 5.
  • EN 300 196-1 - Provides the general ISDN functional protocol coding referenced for supplementary service handling.
  • EN 300 122-1 - Provides the ISDN keypad protocol referenced for keypad-based supplementary services.
  • EN 300 403-1 - Provides the ISDN information element coding context used in IWU-to-IWU mapping.
  • ITU-T Q.931 - Gives the partial message model referenced for IWU-to-IWU message mapping.
  • ITU-T G.821 - Provides the error-performance objectives cited for service quality and availability.
  • ETR 043 and TR 101 178 - Are named as further DECT system information in the foreword.
  • Part 2 of the same deliverable - Contains the ISDN Access Profile and the detailed air-interface protocol description.

What does the SIST EN 300 434-1 V1.2.1:2003 document contain?

The document contains mapping tables that show how DECT and ISDN messages, information elements, and coded fields correspond in both directions. It also contains informative data-flow and state-machine material that helps explain call establishment, release, supplementary-service handling, and exception paths.

Annex B contains the LU7 frame structure, buffering rules, sequence variables, and the ARQ/FEC procedures for 64 kbit/s data transport. Annex C contains the procedure for CLSS, and Annex D contains the IWU call-control state transition diagram and related transition procedures.

Introduction The present document specifies how Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) services are provided over the DECT air interface. One of the main objectives is to describe how the ISDN services are mapped across the DECT air interface in a formal way, so that inter-operability of different manufacturers' equipment can be achieved. This is achieved by describing the Interworking Unit (IWU) procedures and mappings loosely following ITU-T Recommendations Q.601 to Q.699 [67] and by describing air interface protocols.
