General Information

Overview
EN 14111:2022 is a CEN standard that specifies a titrimetric method for determination of the iodine value in Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME). It updates and supersedes EN 14111:2003 and is aligned with EN ISO 3961 adapted for FAME. The method uses Wijs reagent and back-titration with sodium thiosulfate to quantify unsaturation expressed as grams of iodine per 100 g of FAME. The precision statement was established in a round-robin for iodine values between 111–129 g I/100 g; the method can be applied to lower values but precision is not validated below 111 g I/100 g.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Titrimetric determination of iodine value in FAME (report as g iodine/100 g).
- Principle: Addition of Wijs reagent to a dissolved test portion; liberated iodine is reduced and titrated with standardized sodium thiosulfate after addition of potassium iodide and water.
- Reagents & apparatus: Wijs reagent, KI solution, starch indicator, standardized Na2S2O3 solution, solvent (cyclohexane/glacial acetic acid), 500 ml Erlenmeyer flasks, pipettes, burette, analytical balance.
- Test portion: Typical mass 0.13–0.15 g (adjusted for low iodine values).
- Calculation: Iodine value computed from titration volumes, sodium thiosulfate concentration and sample mass (formula provided in the standard).
- Precision: Repeatability limit r ≈ 3 g I/100 g and reproducibility limit R ≈ 5 g I/100 g (general values; see Clause 12 and Annex A for trial data).
- Safety: Use involves hazardous reagents and operations; users must implement laboratory safety and chemical handling procedures.
- Documentation: Test report must reference EN 14111:2022 and include sample ID, sampling method, result (rounded to nearest 1 g I/100 g), deviations and test date.
Applications and users
EN 14111:2022 is intended for:
- Quality control laboratories in biodiesel and FAME production (monitoring unsaturation level).
- Manufacturers of fats, oils and derivatives requiring standardized compositional analysis.
- Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies verifying product specifications.
- Research labs comparing FAME samples or validating production processes.
Practical uses include batch QC, specification compliance, and comparative analysis of feedstock-derived FAME (rapeseed, sunflower, etc.). The iodine value is commonly used as an indicator of unsaturation, which influences oxidative stability and product properties.
