IEC 61300-2-28:2013(E) assesses the corrosive effects of atmospheres polluted with sulphur dioxide on fibre optic devices. The procedure is only suitable for comparative purposes. It can be considered a general corrosion test, but which does not predict the behaviour of the devices in use. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1995. It constitutes a technical revision. The main change with respect to the previous edition is the reconsideration of Clauses 5 and 6, Procedure and Severity, respectively.

Overview
SIST EN 61300-2-28:2013 is a European Standard developed by CLC that defines test and measurement procedures for assessing the corrosive effects of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) polluted atmospheres on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. Falling under the IEC 61300 series, this standard provides a method for accelerated corrosion testing under industrial atmosphere conditions specifically containing sulphur dioxide.
This test procedure is designed primarily for comparative purposes-it offers a way to evaluate materials and devices under controlled corrosive conditions, but it is not intended to predict the exact long-term performance of devices in actual industrial environments. The 2013 edition revises the original 1995 version, focusing on updated procedures and severity classifications of test conditions.
Key Topics
- Purpose: To assess the corrosive impact of sulphur dioxide atmospheres on fibre optic devices.
- Scope: Applies to fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components exposed to industrial atmospheres polluted with sulphur dioxide.
- Test Nature: An accelerated corrosion test to compare materials/devices but not a definitive predictor of in-service behavior.
- Test Chamber Requirements:
- Must comply with IEC 60068-2-42 Test Kc.
- Materials used must be resistant to reaction or absorption of sulphur dioxide.
- Test atmosphere air and SO₂ flow rate must ensure 3 to 5 air changes per hour.
- Specimens protected from direct gas flow and stirred or moved within the chamber.
- Avoid condensation inside the chamber.
- Test Procedure Highlights:
- Specimens prepared and preconditioned according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Measurements taken before, during, and after exposure.
- Exposure under continuous operational or non-operational conditions as required.
- Post-test recovery under standard atmospheric conditions to observe damage and performance.
- Severity Levels: Exposure durations and sulphur dioxide concentrations define test severity, with category E severities recommended (non-mandatory but useful for specification).
Applications
- Quality Control: Helps manufacturers compare different materials or fibre optic components for resistance to corrosion caused by sulphur dioxide.
- Product Development: Assists engineers in designing fibre optic devices that can better withstand harsh industrial environments containing corrosive gases.
- Environmental Testing: Supports verification of the robustness of fibre optic passive components and connectors exposed to sulphur dioxide-polluted atmospheres.
- Certification and Compliance: Provides a standard method useful for certifying fibre optic devices for use in industrial atmospheres where SO₂ corrosion is a concern.
- Maintenance Planning: Enables end users and maintenance teams to understand potential failure modes caused by corrosive industrial atmospheres, guiding replacement or protection strategies.
Related Standards
- IEC 60068-2-42: Environmental testing – Test Kc for sulphur dioxide testing on contacts and connections; forms the basis for the test chamber design used in EN 61300-2-28.
- IEC 61300-1: Basic test and measurement procedures – General guidance and procedures applicable to fibre optic interconnection devices.
- IEC 61300-3-1: Examinations and measurements – Visual examination methods post testing to detect physical deterioration or damage to specimens.
- Other parts of the IEC 61300 series cover different environmental and mechanical testing scenarios relevant to fibre optic devices and components.
Practical Value
Implementing EN 61300-2-28 ensures that fibre optic components tested under standardized sulphur dioxide corrosion conditions adhere to recognized quality and reliability benchmarks. The standard’s focus on test reproducibility, comparability, and controlled conditions allows manufacturers and users to make informed decisions regarding material suitability and device longevity in industrial environments. By adhering to this standard, stakeholders can mitigate risks associated with corrosion-related device failures, leading to improved system uptime and reduced maintenance costs.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts
