General Information

Abstract

This document specifies requirements for 8-strand braided ropes, for 12-strand braided ropes, and for covered rope constructions (single braid, double braid and multi-core construction) for general purpose made of high modulus polyethylene (HMPE), and gives rules for their designation.
Many different types and grades of HMPE fibre exist which are commonly used to produce rope products. This document does not apply to all variations in strength or product performance.

Overview

SIST EN ISO 10325:2026 specifies the requirements for fibre ropes manufactured from high modulus polyethylene (HMPE). This standard covers three main types of rope constructions for general purpose use:

  • 8-strand braided ropes
  • 12-strand braided ropes
  • Covered ropes (including single braid, double braid, and multi-core designs)

By defining construction parameters, material guidelines, and key performance characteristics, this standard facilitates quality assurance and consistency for HMPE rope products across multiple industries. The document also outlines the rules for the designation and marking of ropes, supporting clear identification and traceability within the supply chain.

Key Topics

SIST EN ISO 10325:2026 addresses the following essential areas:

  • Material Specifications: Ropes must use continuous filament HMPE fibres in their load-bearing core. Covered ropes may use different fibres for the protective jacket according to application needs.
  • Rope Constructions: Defines specific requirements for:
    • 8-strand braided ropes (Type L)
    • 12-strand braided ropes (Type T)
    • Covered ropes (Type K), which may include a single or multiple cores protected by a non-load-bearing cover
  • Physical Properties: Establishes minimum values for linear density and breaking strength for both unspliced and eye-spliced terminations.
  • Designation and Identification: Provides a standardized system for rope designations based on type, size, HMPE grade, and stabilization process.
  • Manufacture and Labelling: Outlines requirements for construction, braid pitch, packaging, marking, and delivery lengths, as per ISO 9554.
  • Testing Reference: Specifies that strength and density measurements should conform to ISO 2307 procedures.

Applications

High modulus polyethylene (HMPE) ropes standardised under SIST EN ISO 10325:2026 are chosen for their combination of high strength, low stretch, and light weight. They are widely used in applications where performance, reliability, and safety are paramount. Typical sectors and uses include:

  • Maritime and Offshore Operations: Mooring lines, towing ropes, and winch lines
  • Heavy Industry and Construction: Lifting slings, rigging, and load securing
  • Recreational Marine: Yachting, sailing ropes, and cordage for outdoor sports
  • Transport and Logistics: Container securing and cargo handling
  • Utilities and Maintenance: Rope access, aerial installations, and safety lines

This standard helps manufacturers and end users align expectations for product performance, ensuring the right rope is selected for the intended service environment. Additionally, the document emphasizes that both the engineer and user play a role in ensuring rope safety and longevity through correct selection, application, and maintenance.

Related Standards

To ensure comprehensive understanding and appropriate application, SIST EN ISO 10325:2026 should be used in conjunction with related international rope and fibre standards, including:

  • ISO 1968: Fibre ropes and cordage – Vocabulary
  • ISO 2307: Fibre ropes – Determination of certain physical and mechanical properties
  • ISO 9554: Fibre ropes – General specifications

These documents provide essential definitions, testing methodologies, and additional requirements applicable across fibre rope products.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

braided ropes, 12-strand braided ropes and covered ropes
1 Scope
This document specifies requirements for 8-strand braided ropes, for 12-strand braided ropes, and for
covered rope constructions (single braid, double braid and multi-core construction) for general purpose
made of high modulus polyethylene (HMPE), and gives rules for their designation.
Many different types and grades of HMPE fibre exist which are commonly used to produce rope products.
This document does not cover all variations in strength or product performance. The rope manufacturer
and rope user shall align to ensure the rope design is fit for the intended purpose.
NOTE Safety of a rope is determined by the manufacturer as well as the user. A rope is fit for the intended purpose
if the manufacturer properly engineers, manufacturers, tested and integrates the rope. Only when the user applies,
operates, inspects the rope and have it properly maintained a rope fit for the intended purpose is fit for the intended
service.
