SIST EN 62011-1:2004
(Main)Insulating materials - Industrial, rigid, moulded, laminated tubes and rods of rectangular and hexagonal cross-section based on thermosetting resins for electrical purposes -- Part 1: Definitions, designations and general requirements
- Abstract
Contains the definitions and designations related to, and the general requirements to be fulfilled by, industrial, rigid, moulded, laminated tubes of rectangular cross-section and rods of rectangular and hexagonal cross-section. The moulded sections are manufactured using either phenolic or epoxy resins as the binder and using the following reinforcements: cellulosic paper, cotton cloth or glass cloth. This standard covers both rods and tubes of natural colour and those containing colouring matter or other additives. Materials which conform to this standard meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this standard alone.

SIST EN 62011-1:2004 is the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo publication of the European standard for insulating materials used in electrical applications. It covers industrial, rigid, moulded, laminated tubes and rods with rectangular or hexagonal cross-section based on thermosetting resins, and it sets the definitions, designations and general requirements for these products. Manufacturers, purchasers and quality teams use it to describe, order and check these insulating sections in a consistent way.
What does SIST EN 62011-1:2004 specify?
SIST EN 62011-1:2004 specifies the product family, the naming system and the general requirements for industrial, rigid, moulded, laminated tubes and rods of rectangular or hexagonal cross-section. It is about how these insulating parts are identified and supplied, not about detailed test methods or individual material sheets.
The document is organized into these main clauses:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - Normative references
- Clause 3 - Definitions
- Clause 4 - Designations and abbreviations
- Clause 5 - General requirements - Appearance
- Clause 6 - Dimensions
- Clause 7 - Conditions of supply
- Annex ZA - Normative references to international publications with European publications
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| ZA | Normative references and their corresponding European publications |
The introduction also places this part in a 3-part series:
- Part 1 - Definitions, designations and general requirements
- Part 2 - Methods of test
- Part 3 - Specifications for individual materials
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 62011-1:2004?
SIST EN 62011-1:2004 defines the material family as moulded laminated tubes and rods made with thermosetting resins. The binder is either phenolic or epoxy resin, and the reinforcement is cellulosic paper, cotton cloth or glass cloth. In practice, this tells the reader exactly which constructions belong under the standard.
Product form and terminology
Clause 3 defines the product forms and the basic material terms. A rectangular moulded laminated tube is made by wrapping impregnated layers on a mandrel, curing them in a square or rectangular mould under heat and pressure, and removing the mandrel. A rectangular or hexagonal moulded laminated rod is made in a similar way, with the final cross-section being rectangular or regular hexagonal. In practice, this matters because the manufacturing route and final shape affect machining and fit.
Designation system
Clause 4 sets a coded designation system. The code uses:
- a two-letter resin abbreviation
- a two-letter reinforcement abbreviation
- a two-digit serial number showing the product form and sub-grade
The complete designation also includes the product description, the IEC standard number, the nominal dimensions and, for tubes, the surface finish letter. This matters when writing purchase orders, inspection records or warehouse labels.
Type classification
Table 1 groups product types by resin and reinforcement and links them to typical application characteristics. It distinguishes mechanical, electrical and electronic uses, resistance to tracking, machining behavior and humidity-related performance. That helps a buyer choose a suitable type before moving on to the more specific material sheets in later parts of the series.
Appearance and supply condition
Clause 5 requires each consignment to stay within the specification limits. The standard allows tubes and rods to be supplied either as produced or with a machined finish, and ends must be smooth and squarely trimmed. The material is to be free from voids, holes and open cracks, while varnish finish is only by agreement. In practice, this is the clause used for visual inspection and acceptance checks.
Dimensions and preferred sizes
Clause 6 gives preferred nominal sizes for rectangular tubes, rectangular rods and hexagonal rods in Tables 2 to 4. Tube length and rod length are agreed between purchaser and supplier. This makes the ordering process clearer because the standard limits selection to preferred dimensional ranges instead of leaving every size open.
Packaging and marking
Clause 7 requires packaging that protects the product during transport, handling and storage. The IEC designation and the number of pieces should be marked on each package or its accompanying note, and individual marking is by agreement. That helps preserve traceability from delivery to use.
What terms does SIST EN 62011-1:2004 define?
- Rectangular, moulded, laminated tube - a thermoset tube formed from impregnated layers cured in a rectangular mould and then removed from the mandrel.
- Rectangular or hexagonal moulded, laminated rod - a thermoset rod made from impregnated layers cured to a rectangular or hexagonal cross-section.
- Phenolic resin - a resin class made by polycondensation of phenol and derivatives with aldehydes.
- Epoxy resin - a synthetic resin containing epoxide groups that is formulated to cross-link.
- Cross-section - the shape of the rod or tube when cut at right angles to its length.
- EP - the abbreviation used for epoxy resin in designations.
- PF - the abbreviation used for phenolic resin in designations.
Who uses SIST EN 62011-1:2004?
SIST EN 62011-1:2004 is used by manufacturers of electrical insulating materials, suppliers of moulded tubes and rods, and buyers who need a clear product designation. It is also used by design engineers, quality managers and inspection teams when defining dimensions, surface condition and package marking for electrical applications. Material specifiers use it as the first step before selecting a specific grade in Part 3.
What changed in SIST EN 62011-1:2004 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 62011-1:2004 adopts IEC 62011-1:2002 as EN 62011-1 without technical modification. The European publication also adds Annex ZA for the European treatment of normative references.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 62011-1:2004?
- ISO 472:1999 - provides the plastics vocabulary used as the basis for the definitions in Clause 3.
- IEC 62011-2 - gives the methods of test for this product family.
- IEC 62011-3-1 - gives specifications for individual materials in the same series.
- IEC 61212-1 - is cited as a related standard for similar industrial rigid round laminated tubes and rods.
What does the SIST EN 62011-1:2004 document contain?
The document contains the formal definitions, the designation rules and the general requirements that let users describe these tubes and rods consistently. It also includes the product-type classification table, the preferred-size tables, and worked designation examples that show how the code is built. Annex ZA provides the reference mapping used in the European standard context. These parts are mainly used for specification writing, procurement and incoming inspection.
