General methods of test for pigments and extenders - Part 4: Determination of acidity or alkalinity of the aqueous extract (ISO 787-4:1981)

The principle of the method consists in the hot extraction of the material by following the procedure specified in ISO 787/3, to the stage of obtaining a perfectly clear filtrate. The determination is carried out with indicator solution (method A). If the solution with the methyl red indicator is yellow (alkaline), titrate it with the hydrochloric acid solution to an orange end-point; if the solution with the methyl red indicator is red (acid), titrate it with the sodium or potassium hydroxide solution to an orange end-point. The other method (method B) is the potentiometric determination. Take 100 ml of the test solution, insert the electrodes of the pH measuring device and read the pH value.

Overview

EN ISO 787-4:2017 (identical to ISO 787-4:1981) specifies a general laboratory method for determining the acidity or alkalinity of the aqueous extract of pigments and extenders. The procedure relies on preparing a clear aqueous extract (typically by the hot-extraction procedure in ISO 787-3) and then determining whether the extract is acidic, neutral or alkaline by either an indicator/titration method (Method A) or a potentiometric pH measurement (Method B). Results are reported as the volume of standard titrant needed to neutralize the extract, expressed per 100 g of product.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to pigments and extenders where a general acidity/alkalinity test is appropriate.
  • Sample preparation: Follow ISO 787-3 hot extraction to obtain a perfectly clear filtrate (cold extraction per ISO 787-8 may be used by agreement).
  • Method A - Indicator/titration
    • Use 100 ml of test solution; add 5 drops of methyl red indicator (1 g/L in 60% ethanol).
    • If solution is yellow (alkaline), titrate with HCl (0.05 mol/L) to an orange end‑point.
    • If solution is red (acid), titrate with NaOH or KOH (0.05 mol/L) to an orange end‑point.
  • Method B - Potentiometric
    • Use a calibrated pH measuring device (0.1 unit resolution). Insert electrodes into 100 ml extract and read pH.
    • Interpret pH: between 4 and 8 ≈ neutral; >8 → titrate down to just below 8; <4 → titrate up to just above 4.
  • Quality control
    • Carry out determinations in duplicate; repeat if duplicate results differ by more than 5% of the higher value.
    • Report mean of titrimetric determinations.
  • Reporting: Include product identification, reference to EN ISO 787-4, test result, any deviations and test date.
  • Expression of result: Acidity/alkalinity is expressed in terms of titrant volume (ml of 0.1 mol/L acid or alkali) required to neutralize extract of 100 g sample.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: QC laboratories, pigment and filler manufacturers, paint and coatings formulators, raw materials suppliers, and testing bodies.
  • Practical uses:
    • Routine quality control of pigments and extenders to ensure compatibility with formulations.
    • Detecting residual acids or alkalis that could affect paint stability, curing, or corrosion.
    • Specification testing where a standardized acidity/alkalinity value is required for material acceptance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Ot-ganization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards institutes (ISO member bodies). The work of developing Inter-
national Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the
right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council.
