Overview

The oSIST prEN ISO 10512:2016 standard defines specifications for prevailing torque hexagon regular nuts featuring a non-metallic insert and a fine pitch metric thread. This standard applies primarily to two product grades: Grade A for nominal diameters up to 16 mm and Grade B for diameters greater than 16 mm, covering sizes from 8 mm to 39 mm. Although originally proposed as an ISO draft in 2016, the project was cancelled in 2017; however, the documented details provide valuable insights into design, dimension, and material requirements for fine pitch hexagonal nuts with locking inserts.

These nuts are designed to provide reliable prevailing torque – resistance to loosening under vibration – through an integrated non-metallic insert, often a polyamide ring, offering secure fastening in mechanical assemblies.

Key Topics

  • Thread Specifications: The standard covers fine pitch metric threads (e.g. M8×1, M12×1.5, M36×3), with detailed tables distinguishing preferred and non-preferred thread sizes and associated dimensions.

  • Product Grades:

    • Grade A: For nominal diameters ≤ 16 mm.
    • Grade B: For nominal diameters > 16 mm.
  • Materials:

    • Steel and stainless steel nut bodies, with mechanical properties conforming to ISO 898-2 (carbon and alloy steel nuts) and ISO 3506-2 (corrosion-resistant stainless steel nuts).
    • Non-metallic inserts primarily made from polyamide, ensuring consistent prevailing torque performance.
  • Dimensions: Defined according to ISO 225 with specific metrics for nut width, height, and thread pitch, ensuring compatibility with mating bolts and maintaining proper installation tolerances.

  • Functional and Mechanical Requirements: Compliance with ISO 2320 for prevailing torque characteristics and ISO 8992 for general fastener requirements.

  • Surface Finishes and Coatings:

    • Electroplated coatings specified in ISO 4042.
    • Non-electrolytically applied zinc flake coatings covered under ISO 10683.
    • Passivation of stainless steel as per ISO 16048.
    • Surface discontinuities and quality controlled through ISO 6157-2 and acceptance inspection standardized in ISO 3269.
  • Designation Format: The nuts are classified using the “PTNM” symbol indicating Prevailing Torque with Non-Metallic insert, followed by nut type, ISO number, metric thread size, pitch, and property class. Example:
    PTNM hexagon regular nut ISO 10512 – M12×1.5 – 8

Applications

These nuts are essential in applications where secure fastening is critical, particularly where vibration or dynamic loads may cause loosening. Typical industrial uses include:

  • Automotive assembly: Securing components on engines, transmissions, and chassis with resistance to loosening under vibration.
  • Machinery manufacturing: Fastening parts subject to dynamic stress and continuous operation.
  • Aerospace and transportation: Combining lightweight stainless steel options with fine thread accuracy for precision assembly.
  • Construction: Use in fine pitch threaded assemblies requiring a reliable locking mechanism.
  • Electrical and electronics equipment: Providing vibration-resistant locking in devices sensitive to loosening.

Their design accommodates precise assembly and disassembly without damaging threads, ensuring safety and maintenance ease.

Related Standards

The oSIST prEN ISO 10512:2016 standard references and complements several key international standards:

  • ISO 8673: Hexagon regular nuts with metric fine pitch threads (Product grades A and B).
  • ISO 898-2: Mechanical properties of carbon steel and alloy steel fasteners – nuts.

  • ISO 6157-2: Surface discontinuities for nuts.
  • ISO/TR 16224: Technical aspects of nut design.
  • ISO 3269, ISO 4759-1: Acceptance inspection and tolerance classes for fasteners.

Summary

oSIST prEN ISO 10512:2016 provides a detailed framework for manufacturing, testing, and applying prevailing torque hexagon regular nuts with non-metallic inserts and fine pitch threads. Understanding this standard helps engineers and manufacturers ensure the right balance of mechanical strength, fastening reliability, and material properties for high-performance, vibration-resistant fastening solutions in diverse industrial fields. Proper adherence to these international specifications supports product quality, safety, and interchangeability on a global scale.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national
standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally
carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a
technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee.
International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in
the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
