Overview
The oSIST prEN ISO 7719:2016 standard, titled "Prevailing torque (all-metal) hexagon regular nuts - Product grades A and B," specifies the characteristics and performance requirements for all-metal prevailing torque hexagon nuts with coarse pitch threads. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and processed under CEN, this standard targets metric hexagon nuts ranging from nominal diameters M5 to M39. It covers both product grades A (for sizes up to M16) and B (for sizes exceeding M16), ensuring consistent quality in mechanical properties and functional performance.
Although the project was deleted in ISO/CS in 2017, the draft provides a comprehensive foundation for prevailing torque nuts-critical components in fastening systems where resistance to loosening is essential.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard applies to all-metal prevailing torque hexagon regular nuts with coarse threads, focusing on nominal diameters M5 to M39. Nuts are classified as product grade A for sizes ≤ M16, and grade B for sizes > M16.Dimensional Specifications
Dimensions conform largely with ISO 4032 (hexagon regular nuts), supplemented by prevailing torque features designed to resist loosening. Two main thread categories are defined:- Preferred threads including sizes M5 to M36
- Non-preferred threads such as M7, M14, M27, and others
Detailed dimensions such as pitch, max/min diameters, and widths across flats are specified to ensure interchangeability and performance.
Material and Mechanical Properties
The standard distinguishes between steel and stainless steel nuts, with mechanical properties aligned to ISO 898-2 and ISO 3506-2 respectively. Specifications include:- Quenching and tempering requirements for steel nuts (mandatory or optional depending on size)
- Corrosion resistance and passivation for stainless steel nuts
- Defined property classes such as 5, 8, 9, and 10 for various applications
Functional Requirements
Ensures prevailing torque capability through all-metal design without inserts. Functional properties and testing conform to ISO 2320 for steel nuts, with emphasis on the nuts’ ability to maintain preload and resist loosening under vibration or dynamic load.Designation Format
Nuts are designated with a clear notation reflecting type and class, e.g.,PTAM hexagon regular nut ISO 7719 – M12 – 8
where PTAM denotes Prevailing Torque All-Metal, followed by size and property class.Normative References
References include key fastener standards such as ISO 262 (thread profiles), ISO 965-2 (tolerances), ISO 4759-1 (tolerances and grades), ISO 6157-2 (surface discontinuities), and others that govern coatings, testing, and inspection.
Applications
Mechanical Engineering and Assembly
Widely used in automotive, aerospace, machinery, and structural assemblies where secure fastening is critical. The all-metal prevailing torque nuts provide reliable vibration resistance without needing polymer inserts, making them suitable for high-temperature and harsh environments.Corrosion-Resistant Fastening
Stainless steel variants conforming to ISO 3506-2 serve well in marine, chemical, and outdoor applications where corrosion resistance plays a vital role.Standardized Production and Quality Control
Manufacturers and purchasers use ISO 7719 to ensure fastener compatibility, performance consistency, and regulatory compliance, enabling streamlined procurement across industries.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national
standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally
carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a
technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee.
International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in
the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).

— d and m have been specified with two decimal place;
w, min w, min
— the preferred and the non-preferred threads are given in two separate tables, and the threads M7,
M27, M33 and M39 have been added;
— the mechanical properties and specified property classes have been updated in accordance with the
diameter ranges;
— for steel nuts, quenching and tempering is specified in accordance with ISO 898-2 as mandatory or
optional;
