Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 29: Polyester or polyesterimide overcoated with polyamide-imide enamelled rectangular copper wire, class 200 (IEC 60317-29:1990/A2:2010)

This International Standard specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wire of class 200 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyester or polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The superimposed coating is based on polyamide-imide resin. NOTE - A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain pe rformance or application characteristics.
Class 200 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 200 and a heat shock temperature of at least 220 °C. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which it is recommended that the wire be operated and this will depend on many factors, including the type of equipment involved. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is:
- width: min. 2,0 mm max. 16,0 mm;
- thickness: min. 0,80 mm max. 5,60 mm.
Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included in this specification and apply to the complete range of conductors. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified width/thickness ratio are given in IEC 317-0-2.

- širina: najmanj 2,0 mm, največ 16,0 mm;

Overview

SIST EN 60317-29:2001/A2:2010 is a European standard specifying the requirements for particular types of winding wires, specifically polyester or polyesterimide overcoated with polyamide-imide enamelled rectangular copper wire, class 200. Developed under the auspices of CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), this standard aligns with the IEC 60317-29:1990/A2:2010 international publication and focuses on the technical specifications and quality criteria for enamelled copper wires used in electrotechnical applications.

The amendment A2, approved in 2010, updates the original EN 60317-29:1996, ensuring harmonization with current industry needs and technical advancements in wire insulation and coating technologies. This standard governs the design, testing, and acceptance criteria for winding wires with polyester or polyesterimide base enamel, enhanced with a polyamide-imide overcoat for superior thermal and mechanical properties.

Key Topics

  • Winding Wire Types: Focus on rectangular copper wires with enamel insulation composed of polyester or polyesterimide, further coated with polyamide-imide enamel to enhance performance.
  • Class 200 Wire: Specifies insulation class 200, indicating suitability for applications where thermal endurance up to 200°C is necessary.
  • Coating and Overcoating: Details the layering system-polyester or polyesterimide enamel base, followed by a polyamide-imide top coat-to improve insulation, mechanical strength, and resistance to environmental factors.
  • Testing and Quality Procedures:
    • Incorporates definitions and testing methods in line with IEC 60317-0-2 standards for general enamelled rectangular copper wires.
    • Notes that certain traditional tests like the pin hole test are deemed inappropriate for this wire type.
    • Addresses the status of ongoing consideration for 'cut-through' tests to assess coating durability under mechanical stress.
  • Normative References: The standard references IEC 60317-0-2 series for foundational testing and definitions to ensure consistency and reliability across products.

Applications

SIST EN 60317-29:2001/A2:2010 winding wires are critical components in the manufacture of electrical devices requiring reliable insulation and thermal durability, including:

  • Electric Motors: For stator and rotor windings requiring robust insulation to withstand high operating temperatures.
  • Transformers and Inductors: Where compact winding wires with excellent thermal and mechanical endurance improve efficiency and lifespan.
  • Generators and Automotive Electrical Components: Demanding wires that maintain performance under thermal cycling and mechanical vibration.
  • Precision Electromechanical Devices: Utilized in appliances and equipment where space-saving rectangular wires with high-quality enamel coatings provide superior insulation and durability.

The combination of polyester or polyesterimide base enameling with a polyamide-imide overcoat ensures these wires exhibit enhanced resistance against heat, abrasion, chemical exposure, and electrical stress, thereby increasing the reliability of electrical machines and devices.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60317-0-2: General requirements and testing procedures for enamelled rectangular copper wire, forming the basis for testing methods referenced in EN 60317-29.
  • EN 60317-29 (original 1996 version): The base standard for polyester or polyesterimide enamelled wire, which SIST EN 60317-29:2001/A2:2010 amends and updates.
  • IEC 60317 Series: A suite of standards covering various types of winding wires, insulation classes, and enamel compositions, offering comprehensive guidelines for manufacturers and users of electrical winding wires.

Summary

SIST EN 60317-29:2001/A2:2010 is an essential European standard defining the specifications for class 200 polyester or polyesterimide enamelled rectangular copper wire with a polyamide-imide overcoat. This standard ensures that winding wires provide high thermal endurance and superior insulation properties, underpinning their use in critical electrotechnical components like motors, transformers, and generators. By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can guarantee quality, safety, and performance consistency in high-temperature and mechanically demanding environments. This makes EN 60317-29 a valuable reference for professionals in electrical engineering, wire manufacturing, and quality assurance seeking compliance with recognized international and European norms.
