5 OPTICAL FIBRE CABLES –
7 Part 1-205: Generic specification –
8 Basic optical cable test procedures –
9 Environmental test methods – Water penetration, Method F5
11 FOREWORD
12 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
13 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
14 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
15 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
16 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
17 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
18 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
19 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
20 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
21 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
22 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
23 interested IEC National Committees.
24 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
25 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
26 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
27 misinterpretation by any end user.
28 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
29 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
30 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
31 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
32 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
33 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
34 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
35 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
36 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
37 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
38 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
39 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
40 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
41 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
42 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
43 International Standard IEC 60794-1-205 has been prepared by subcommittee 86A: Fibres and
44 cables, of IEC technical committee 86: Fibre optics.
45 This first edition of IEC 60794-1-205 cancels and replaces methods F5 of the second edition of
46 IEC 60794-1-22 published in 2017.
47 This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous
48 edition:
49 a) the environmental test contained in IEC 60794-1-22: 2017 will now be individually numbered
50 in the IEC 60794-1-2xx series. Each test method is now considered to be an individual
51 document rather than part of a multi-test method compendium. Full cross-reference details
52 are given in IEC 60794-1-2.

53 b) The clauses of “4.6 Details to be specified” and “4.7 Details to be reported” were revised.
54 The text of this International Standard is based on the following documents:
FDIS Report on voting
86A/xxxx/FDIS 86A/xxxx/RVD
56 Full information on the voting for the approval of this International Standard can be found in the
57 report on voting indicated in the above table.
58 The language used for the development of this International Standard is English.
59 This document has been drafted in accordance with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 , and
60 developed in accordance with ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 and ISO/IEC Directives, IEC Supplement,
61 available at www.iec.ch/members_experts/refdocs. The main document types developed by IEC are
62 described in greater detail at www.iec.ch/publications.
63 A list of all parts in the IEC 60794 series, published under the general title Optical fibre cables,
64 can be found on the IEC website.
65 The committee has decided that the contents of this document will remain unchanged until the
66 stability date indicated on the IEC website under "http://webstore.iec.ch" in the data related to
67 the specific document. At this date, the document will be
68 • reconfirmed,
69 • withdrawn,
70 • replaced by a revised edition, or
71 • amended.

75 INTRODUCTION
76 The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) draws attention to the fact that it is claimed that
77 compliance with this document may involve the use of a patent. IEC takes no position concerning the
78 evidence, validity, and scope of this patent right.
79 The holder of this patent right has assured IEC that s/he is willing to negotiate licenses under
80 reasonable and non-discriminatory terms and conditions with applicants throughout the world.
81 In this respect, the statement of the holder of this patent right is registered with IEC. Information may
82 be obtained from the patent database available at http://patents.iec.ch.
83 Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of

91 Basic optical cable test procedures –
92 Environmental test methods – Water penetration, Method F5
96 1 Scope
97 This part of IEC 60794 defines test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements
98 for the environmental performance of optical cable. The tests determine the ability of optical
99 cables to prevent water migration along a specified length.
100 In this document, it is assumed that water may migrate through the cable due to sheath damage,
101 or from the cable end, should water migrate into the protective housing, for example closure.
