-   ester type very high pressure grease (code letter A), operating range from - 73 °C to 121 °C or,
-   synthetic hydrocarbon type very high pressure grease general purpose (code letter B), operating range from - 54 °C to 177 °C.
Their field of application when lubricated with grease code letter A is limited to 121 °C.

Overview

EN 2335:2005 (CEN / AECMA-STAN) specifies the characteristics, dimensions and permissible loads for spherical plain bearings made from corrosion-resisting steel, intended for use in fixed or moving parts of aircraft structures and control mechanisms. The standard covers bearings without assembly slot, available with or without swaging groove and with optional lubrication holes and grooves. It defines configuration, materials, surface treatments, internal clearances and static load ratings, and references related technical specifications.

Key practical points from the standard:

  • Temperature service range: -54 °C to 150 °C (bearing construction).
  • Lubrication constraints: grease code A (ester, -73 °C to 121 °C) or code B (synthetic hydrocarbon, -54 °C to 177 °C); use with grease code A is limited to 121 °C.
  • Configurations: without assembly slot; with/without swaging groove; optional lubrication holes/grooves on inner or outer rings.

Key Topics

  • Dimensions and masses: Detailed in figures and tables; dimensions are in millimetres and apply after surface treatment.
  • Internal clearances and permissible static loads: Specified in tabulated form (Table 2), distinguishing axial and radial clearances and normal/reduced load cases.
  • Materials and hardness:
    • Inner ring per EN 2030, hardness 55–62 HRC.
    • Outer ring per EN 3490 or EN 3161, hardness 28–37 HRC before swaging.
  • Surface treatment:
    • Outer ring: dry-film (antiscoring) treatment per EN 2491 on the spherical surface.
    • Inner ring: passivation according to ISO 8075 (code T) or no treatment.
  • Designation and marking: Example designation format is shown (e.g., PLAIN BEARING EN2335AP15ERT1). Marking follows EN 2424 (style A).

Applications

EN 2335 bearings are suitable for aerospace applications requiring:

  • Interchangeable, standardized spherical plain bearings in airframes and control mechanisms.
  • Reliable performance across defined temperature and lubrication limits.
  • Configurable lubrication and swaging options to suit assembly and maintenance requirements.

They are primarily intended where corrosion-resisting steel bearings (without assembly slot) are required, and where adherence to harmonized European/AECMA aerospace practices supports safety, traceability and compatibility.

  • ISO 8075 - Surface treatment of hardenable stainless steel parts.
  • EN 2030, EN 3161, EN 3490 - Material specifications referenced for inner and outer ring steels.

For design, procurement and certification, use EN 2335 in conjunction with EN 2337 and the cited material and treatment standards to ensure compliance, interchangeability and safe operation in aerospace environments.
