Overview
EN 62271-1:2017/A1:2021 (CENELEC adoption of IEC 62271-1:2017/AMD1:2021) is an amendment to the common specifications for high‑voltage switchgear and controlgear for alternating current (AC). Published November 2021 and adopted by CENELEC, this amendment clarifies requirements for auxiliary and control equipment, supply‑voltage behaviour, immunity to voltage dips/interruptions, and interfaces to digital communication systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
Scope and status
- Amendment A1 modifies EN 62271-1:2017 and is aligned with IEC 62271-1:2017/AMD1:2021.
- National implementation and withdrawal dates were fixed by CENELEC following approval.
Auxiliary and control equipment (clause 6.4.1)
- Explicitly includes electronic controls, supervision, monitoring and communication.
- Auxiliary/control circuits must operate normally when supply voltage is within 85 % to 110 % of rated supply voltage (Ua).
- For DC supplies, ripple voltage ≤ 5 % of Ua is required.
Voltage dips and interruptions
- Equipment must be free from voltage dips and interruptions exceeding manufacturer‑declared limits per IEC 61000‑4‑29 (DC) and IEC 61000‑4‑11 (AC).
- For interruptions longer than declared limits:
- No false operations, alarms or remote signalling shall occur.
- Manufacturer must declare device behaviour on interruption and on return of supply.
- Subsequent actions shall only complete on a new valid operational command.
- Demonstration testing may use any dip duration exceeding the declared limit.
Protection and safety
- Precautions required when supply voltages fall below the minimum to prevent equipment damage or unsafe operation.
- Specific provisions for shunt closing/opening releases and under‑voltage releases are referenced (clause 6.9).
Digital interfaces
- Requirements to ensure compatibility with IEC 61850 are referenced and detailed in IEC 62271-3 (digital interfaces based on IEC 61850).
- Note that logical nodes (e.g., XCBR, XSWI) cover some - but not all - electronic nameplate and tendering information.
Applications and practical value
- Defines performance and safety expectations for manufacturers, testers and asset owners of high‑voltage switchgear and controlgear used in substations, power generation, transmission and industrial installations.
- Helps ensure reliable operation of protection, control, supervision and communication under realistic supply disturbances.
- Supports specification writing, type testing, factory acceptance testing (FAT) and tendering documentation.
Who should use this standard
- Switchgear and controlgear manufacturers and designers
- Substation and grid asset owners / operators
- System integrators and protection & control engineers
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Specifiers preparing procurement, tender and acceptance documents
