Aerospace series - Non-metallic materials - Textiles - Test method - Determination of conductivity and pH of aqueous extracts

This document specifies the requirements for the determination of conductivity and pH of aqueous extracts of textile materials.
This method has been written in response to an aerospace requirement for a method of extraction using hot water as the EN 1413 requires only a cold water extraction method.

Overview

EN 4426:2020 - published by CEN for the aerospace series - is a test method for determining the conductivity and pH of aqueous extracts from textile materials used in aerospace applications. The standard defines a hot-water extraction procedure (developed to meet aerospace requirements) and complementary measurement techniques to assess ionic contamination and acidity/alkalinity of textile extracts. It supplements existing textile test methods by providing a hot extraction alternative to EN 1413’s cold-water method.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Measurement of conductivity (mS/m) and pH of aqueous extracts from textile samples for aerospace non-metallic materials (textiles).
  • Extraction method: Hot-water reflux of conditioned samples - nominal 5 g of sample in 100 ml de‑ionised water (liquor ratio 1:20), boiled gently for 60 minutes, cooled to (20 ± 2) °C.
  • Sample handling: Samples cut to readily wettable pieces (nominal 10 mm squares), conditioned under standard atmosphere (EN ISO 2231), and handled to avoid contamination.
  • Conductivity measurement: Use of a platinized electrode conductivity cell (recommended cell constant K ≈ 0.1 cm), calibrated at 20 °C with KCl 0.001 mol/l (12,780 mS/m). Conductivity calculated using the standard temperature-correction formula specified in the standard.
  • pH measurement: pH meter with glass electrode calibrated with two buffers (4 & 7 for acidic ranges, 7 & 9 for alkaline ranges). pH is determined from the second and third extracts; mean reported to nearest 0.05 pH unit.
  • Equipment & reagents: Round-bottom flasks (250 ml) with ground joints, water-cooled condensers, de‑ionised water (<0.2 mS/m), laboratory balance, conductivity meter, pH meter.
  • Test report requirements: Reference to EN 4426, sample identification (lot/batch), measured conductivity and pH, operator traceability, test date, and details of any deviations.

Applications and users

  • Practical for aerospace materials engineers, textile suppliers, laboratory technicians, and quality control teams who need to verify ionic contamination and chemical neutrality of textile components (e.g., seat fabrics, insulation, linings) used in aircraft and spacecraft.
  • Useful in incoming inspection, supplier qualification, failure analysis and environmental compatibility assessments where ionic conductivity and pH of extracts can affect corrosion, electronic systems, or adhesive bonding.
