Overview

SIST EN 2486:2005 is a European Standard that specifies the requirements for aluminium alloy AL-P2618A forging stock used in aerospace applications. Prepared by the European Association of Aerospace Manufacturers (AECMA-STAN) and approved by CEN, this standard ensures that aluminium alloy AL-P2618A forging stock meets stringent quality, mechanical, and chemical criteria essential for high-performance aerospace components.

This standard forms part of a broader series of metallic material standards aligned with aerospace industry requirements, supporting consistency, reliability, and safety in aerospace manufacturing processes.

Key Topics

  • Material Specification
SIST EN 2486:2005 defines the chemical composition limits for AL-P2618A aluminium alloy used in forging stock, including controlled contents of elements such as silicon, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, nickel, zinc, titanium, and zirconium.

  • Forms and Dimensions
The standard covers aluminium alloy stock in forms like ingot, billet, rod, bar, section, and plate, with specific maximum dimension limits (e.g., diameter or thickness up to 1000 mm depending on the form).

  • Technical Requirements

    • Delivery conditions and heat treatments are specified, including the typical T6 heat treatment recommended for optimal mechanical properties.
    • Mechanical performance criteria, such as minimum proof stress (≥ 340 MPa), tensile strength (≥ 430 MPa), and minimum elongation (≥ 6%), are established to ensure material integrity.
    • Test methods comply with EN 4400-6, which outlines technical specifications for aerospace aluminium alloy forging stock.
  • Quality and Inspection
The standard mandates inspections for external and internal defects, dimensional accuracy, and marking consistent with aerospace industry protocols. Potential defects like peripheral coarse grain and back-end defects are addressed referencing EN 4400-6 requirements.

  • Heat Treatment Guidance
Heat treatment involves solution treating at 520–535°C followed by water quenching and ageing at 195–205°C for 16 to 24 hours, ensuring optimal mechanical properties.

Applications

  • Aerospace Components Manufacturing
SIST EN 2486:2005 aluminium alloy AL-P2618A forging stock is specifically designed for critical aerospace applications requiring high-strength, corrosion-resistant, and lightweight materials. Typical uses include structural aircraft parts, engine components, and other forged aerospace parts.

  • Forging Processes
This standard governs forgings prepared from cast, extruded, or hot-rolled stock, facilitating consistent quality in aerospace-grade forged components.

  • Material Qualification
Suppliers and manufacturers can use SIST EN 2486:2005 to qualify aluminium AL-P2618A materials for aerospace projects, ensuring compliance with industry-standard mechanical and chemical requirements and supporting procurement and quality assurance processes.
