Overview

SIST EN ISO 14460:2000/A1:2002 is a European amendment to the international standard ISO 14460:1999, focusing on protective clothing for automobile racing drivers. This amendment specifically updates the test methods related to protection against heat and flame, introducing a modified flexion test to assess the durability and mechanical resistance of protective clothing materials after flame exposure. Developed under the auspices of CEN and ISO technical committees dedicated to personal safety and protective equipment, this standard is critical for ensuring safety in high-risk motorsport environments.

Key Topics

  • Protective Clothing Performance: Specifies requirements for materials used in racing suits to withstand intense heat and flame exposure, minimizing injury risk to drivers.
  • Modified Flexion Test: A newly introduced mechanical resistance test applies a repeated folding action to specimen materials exposed to flame, simulating real-world stresses and flexing during racing.
  • Test Procedure Details:
    • Flame exposure applied for 11 seconds ± 0.2 seconds.
    • Specimens sized 140 mm by 140 mm.
    • Post-flame exposure, specimens are folded 180° five times with a calibrated 2-kg weight applied on each fold.
    • This test checks the integrity and durability of protective materials after thermal stress.
  • Compliance and Implementation: SIST EN ISO 14460:2000/A1:2002 is mandated to be adopted by member countries of the European Union and EFTA, ensuring harmonized safety requirements across Europe for automobile racing apparel.

Applications

This standard is essential for manufacturers, designers, and safety engineers involved in:

  • Automobile Racing Gear Production: Ensuring racing suits, gloves, and other apparel offer reliable flame resistance and maintain mechanical integrity after exposure.
  • Safety Compliance Assessment: Laboratories and certification bodies use the modified flexion test to verify clothing performance against international benchmarks.
  • Motorsport Event Regulation: Racing organizations rely on standards like EN ISO 14460 to set mandatory protective clothing requirements for drivers.
  • Technical Innovation in Protective Fabrics: Research and development teams can benchmark new heat-resistant materials and garment assemblies to meet or exceed these standardized test parameters.

Ultimately, compliance with SIST EN ISO 14460:2000/A1:2002 enhances driver safety by guaranteeing protective clothing not only withstands heat and flame but also endures physical stresses encountered during competitive racing.

Related Standards

  • ISO 14460:1999: The base international standard for protective clothing for automobile racing drivers, detailing performance requirements and test methods prior to the amendment.
  • ISO 9151: Specifies the flame test apparatus used as part of the protective clothing evaluation, integral to the modified flexion test procedure.
  • ISO/TC 94 Series: Encompasses standards on personal safety protective clothing and equipment, providing a broader framework for related safety apparel.
  • CEN/TC 162 Standards: European standards committee for protective clothing, hand and arm protection, and lifejackets, under which EN ISO 14460 falls.

Adhering to SIST EN ISO 14460:2000/A1:2002 ensures rigorous heat and flame protection in motor racing apparel, combining international best practices with enhanced testing for mechanical resilience-an essential step in protecting drivers in one of the most hazardous sporting environments.
