Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-2:2024/A11:2024 is a key European standard focused on the safety requirements for electric vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances used in household and similar environments. Published by CLC (CENELEC), this amendment aligns safety practices for vacuum cleaners, including those equipped for animal grooming, with a voltage rating not exceeding 250 V. The document includes provisions specific to domestic and similar settings, such as shops, hotels, and bed and breakfast establishments, ensuring that these appliances are safe for general users.

Key Topics

  • Expanded Application Scope: The standard now clearly includes appliances intended for use not only in homes but also in shops, farmhouses, hotels, and other residential environments.
  • Specific Safety Requirements: Focuses on protecting users from common hazards, such as mechanical injuries from moving parts, electrical risks, and damage to power supply cords.
  • Instructions and Marking: Emphasizes the importance of accurate warning labels, particularly for accessories with rotating parts to prevent entrapment.
  • Mechanical Strength and Stability: Sets out detailed drop tests and mechanical durability checks, ensuring appliances withstand real-world mishandling without compromising safety.
  • Constructional Safeguards:
    • Hinged handles on free-standing appliances must require a deliberate action to operate.
    • Openings on power-rotating brushes are restricted to minimize the risk of accidental contact.
    • Appliances must be designed such that running over the power cord does not cause damage.
  • National Special Conditions: Includes specific requirements for markets such as Switzerland, particularly regarding integrated socket outlets and water-resistant outdoor models.
  • Testing Protocols: Outlines test orientations and procedures, especially for hand-held and water-suction appliances, to verify compliance with all requirements.

Applications

The standard is applicable to a wide array of electrical cleaning appliances, such as:

  • Household vacuum cleaners: Corded and cordless models used for cleaning floors, carpets, and furniture.
  • Water-suction cleaning appliances: Units designed to pick up both dry dust and liquid spills, supporting tasks in kitchens, bathrooms, or during deep cleaning.
  • Vacuum cleaners for animal grooming: Devices specifically equipped or accessorized for safely handling pet hair.
  • Appliances in commercial and semi-commercial settings: For use in shops, hotels, motels, and similar environments where laypersons will operate the equipment as part of regular housekeeping.

The standard helps manufacturers, importers, and retailers demonstrate product conformity, enhance user confidence, and ensure regulatory compliance throughout the European Economic Area.

Related Standards

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-2:2024/A11:2024 is best used in conjunction with the following related standards to ensure comprehensive appliance safety:

  • EN 60335-1: General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
  • EN IEC 60335-2-2:2022: The previous edition, now supplemented and partially replaced by this amendment.
  • IEC 60584-1: Specifies thermocouple characteristics for temperature measurement during safety tests.
  • IEC/TS 62885-1: Related to general requirements and testing methods for surface cleaning appliances.
  • EN ISO 7010: Safety signs and symbols, important for appliance labelling and warnings.
  • EN ISO 14688-1: Soil identification and testing, potentially relevant for outdoor cleaning equipment.
  • IEC 60335-2-69: Harmonized requirements for commercial vacuum cleaners and other cleaning machines.

For organizations involved in the design, manufacture, testing, or certification of vacuum cleaners and water-suction appliances, compliance with SIST EN IEC 60335-2-2:2024/A11:2024 ensures products meet rigorous European safety expectations, reduces risk, and builds consumer trust.
