SIST EN 14755:2006
(Main)Extruded particleboards - Specifications
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies the requirements for non load-bearing extruded particleboards for use in dry conditions.
NOTE Dry conditions are defined in terms of service class 1 of EN 1995-1-1 which is characterized by a moisture content in the material corresponding to a temperature of 20°C and a relative humidity of the surrounding air only exceeding 65% for a few weeks per year. Boards of this type are only suitable in biological hazard class 1 of EN 335-3.

SIST EN 14755:2006 is the Slovenian standard for extruded particleboards, identical with EN 14755:2005. It specifies requirements for non load-bearing extruded particleboards used in dry conditions, and it gives the classification, test methods, factory production control and marking needed by manufacturers, laboratories, purchasers and inspectors.
What does SIST EN 14755:2006 specify?
SIST EN 14755:2006 covers extruded particleboards intended for non load-bearing use in dry service. The scope links “dry conditions” to service class 1 of EN 1995-1-1 and limits these boards to biological hazard class 1 of EN 335-3, which matters when the board is selected for indoor or other low-moisture applications.
The document is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, terms and definitions, symbols and abbreviations, requirements, supplementary properties, factory production control, and marking. It also has two annexes, one normative and one informative.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Test methods for bending strength, internal bond and dimensional variations |
| Annex B | Supplementary properties available on request |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 14755:2006?
SIST EN 14755:2006 requires each board to meet the general requirements in Table 1 and the mechanical-property requirements in Table 2. For several properties, the standard uses percentile values from multiple boards, so compliance is based on production consistency, not just single good results.
General product requirements
- Moisture content at dispatch must stay within the specified range. In practice, this controls handling, storage and later dimensional stability.
- The mean solid density within a board must stay within a specified tolerance. This matters because density affects strength, machining and uniformity.
- Formaldehyde potential is classified as E1 or E2 using EN 120 or EN 717-1. In practice, the class tells buyers and regulators how much emission or release the board may have.
- The standard notes that some countries allow only class E1.
Mechanical performance
- Mechanical properties are verified with the test methods in Annex A.
- Table 2 sets minimum bending strength and internal bond requirements for the board types ES, ET, ESL and ETL, with bending requirements depending on thickness range.
- The tensile strength perpendicular to the board plane is controlled for the board types listed in the table. For the user, this is the key indicator for how well the board resists splitting across its thickness.
Production control and marking
- Factory production control shall follow EN 326-2.
- Sampling is random, and the test intervals in Table 3 limit how long production can run without re-checking moisture, density, internal bond, bending strength and formaldehyde potential.
- Alternative test methods and unconditioned test pieces may be used only when a valid correlation to the specified methods is shown.
- Each board or package shall be marked with the manufacturer identification, the standard number, panel type, nominal thickness, formaldehyde class, and batch or production date code. This supports traceability through supply and use.
What terms does SIST EN 14755:2006 define?
- Solid density - The density of the board without the tubes.
- Panel density - The density of the board as a whole.
- Cheek thickness - The shortest distance between the edge of a tube and the panel surface.
- ES (Extruded Solid) - A board without tubes that meets the solid-density threshold used by the standard.
- ET (Extruded Tubes) - A board with tubes that meets both the solid-density and cheek-thickness thresholds.
- ESL (Extruded Solid Light) - A board without tubes that falls below the ES density threshold.
- ETL (Extruded Tubes Light) - A board with tubes that falls below the ET density or cheek-thickness threshold.
Who uses SIST EN 14755:2006?
SIST EN 14755:2006 is used by manufacturers of extruded particleboards, factory quality-control staff, and external inspection bodies. It is also used by testing laboratories that measure moisture content, density, formaldehyde potential, bending strength, internal bond and swelling.
Buyers, specifiers and product certifiers use it to compare board types, check whether a board is suitable for dry conditions, and verify the marking and production-control evidence. It is especially relevant in the wood-based panels sector.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 14755:2006?
- EN 120 - Perforator method for formaldehyde content.
- EN 310 - Modulus of elasticity in bending and bending strength.
- EN 317 - Thickness swelling after immersion in water.
- EN 319 - Tensile strength perpendicular to the plane of the board.
- EN 322 - Moisture content.
- EN 323 - Density.
- EN 326-1 - Sampling, cutting and expression of test results.
- EN 326-2 - Quality control in the factory.
- EN 717-1 - Chamber method for formaldehyde emission.
- EN 1995-1-1 - Defines the service class used for the dry-condition scope note.
- EN 335-3 - Defines the biological hazard class referenced in the scope note.
- EN 324-1 and EN 324-2 - Used in Annex B for thickness, dimensions, squareness and edge straightness.
What does the SIST EN 14755:2006 document contain?
The document contains general requirements, classification by board type, and tables for product requirements and test intervals. It also contains Annex A, which describes sampling, test-piece dimensions, apparatus and procedures for bending strength, internal bond and dimensional variation by swelling.
Annex A includes a calculation method for dimensional variation after water immersion, and Annex B lists supplementary properties that can be determined on request. Together, these parts support product specification, routine testing and factory production control.
