SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI TS 101 890-3 for TIPHON Release 3. It specifies an Abstract Test Suite (ATS) and a partial Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (PIXIT) proforma for TIPHON profile implementations of ITU-T Recommendation H.245, so test labs and implementers can assess conformance and prepare test data for H.245 equipment.
What does SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004 specify?
SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004 specifies the ATS for the TIPHON profile for ITU-T Recommendation H.245, together with the partial PIXIT proforma and the PCTR proforma used with that ATS. The scope is conformance testing for H.245 protocol implementations, with the test system centered on originating and terminating endpoints in a packet-based LAN/TCP/IP environment.
The document is organized into seven clauses and four annexes:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - References
- Clause 3 - Definitions and abbreviations
- Clause 4 - Abstract Test Method (ATM)
- Clause 5 - Untestable Test Purposes (TP)
- Clause 6 - ATS conventions
- Clause 7 - Primitives
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Abstract Test Suite (ATS), including TTCN.GR and TTCN.MP forms |
| Annex B | Partial PIXIT proforma |
| Annex C | PCTR proforma |
| Annex D | Bibliography |
This structure matters because it separates the test method, the executable test content, the information the implementation must supply, and the report forms used to record results.
What are the key requirements of SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004?
SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004 defines how to test H.245 behavior in a TIPHON profile and how to name, parameterize and report those tests. In practice, it gives a lab a repeatable conformance test basis and gives the supplier a clear list of the information needed to run the suite.
Test architecture and scope
Clause 4 sets a single-party remote test concept with a Lower Tester (LT), an ATS, and three points of control and observation: TT_PCO, CHN_PCO and UT_PCO. The IUT can be an Originating Endpoint or a Terminating Endpoint. The practical effect is that the suite is designed for black-box conformance testing, not internal inspection of the implementation.
Clause 4 also states that H.245 messages are carried within H.225.0 messages according to H.323. For the reader, this means the tests are built around the signaling stack actually used on the network, not around H.245 in isolation.
Untestable test purposes and test case coverage
Clause 5 lists test purposes that are not implemented in the ATS because of the chosen abstract test method or other restrictions. Clause 6.1.3.1 also says the test cases are listed in the same order as the Test Suite Structure (TSS) and TP document. In practice, this keeps the ATS aligned with the test purpose document and explains why some test case numbers are skipped.
Clause 6.1.3.2 defines the TC naming pattern as TC__, where the IUT type, procedure group and test type are encoded in the identifier. The procedure groups include CEP, MSD, LCS, BLC, CLC and MRS, and the test types include BV, BI and BO. That helps a lab map each test case to the exact behavior under test.
ATS naming and implementation conventions
Clause 6.1 defines naming rules for declarations, constraints and dynamic behavior. Type definitions use uppercase, while element and field names use lowercase, and the document gives specific prefixes for test suite operations, parameters, constants, variables and timers. In practice, these rules make the TTCN material consistent and easier to maintain or automate.
Clause 6.2 says ASPs and PDUs are parameterized so the relevant values are always visible in the dynamic part, and it avoids modified constraints where possible. It also requires labeled verdict assignment and uses different default trees for preamble, test body and postamble. For a user of the suite, this means the test logs should show clearly where a verdict was assigned and which part of the test produced it.
Primitives used at the PCOs
Clause 7 defines the primitives used at each PCO. At CHN_PCO, rcv_pdu and snd_pdu receive and transmit H.245 messages. At TT_PCO, open_protocol_req/open_protocol_ind and close_protocol_req/close_protocol_ind open and close the channel. At UT_PCO, activate_entity_req, check_state_req, release_entity_req, transfer_accept_req and transfer_reject_req control or check the H.245 upper layer. In practice, these primitives are the interface the tester uses to drive the IUT during the campaign.
Test artifacts and report forms
Annex A provides the ATS in TTCN form. Annex B provides the partial PIXIT proforma, which is the questionnaire the implementation team completes before testing. Annex C provides the PCTR proforma, which is the report structure used to record the campaign, its conformance status and the results for Originating Endpoint and Terminating Endpoint runs.
What terms does SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004 define?
- Abstract Test Suite (ATS) - the collection of abstract test cases and related test structure used to assess conformance.
- Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (PIXIT) - implementation-specific information that the test lab needs before running the ATS.
- Protocol Conformance Test Report (PCTR) - the report form used to document the test campaign and its outcomes.
- Implementation Under Test (IUT) - the H.245 implementation being assessed.
- Point of Control and Observation (PCO) - a test interface where the tester controls or observes protocol behavior.
- Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) - the notation used to express the ATS.
- Upper Tester (UT) - the test-side interface that interacts with the upper layer of the IUT.
Who uses SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004?
SIST-TS TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1:2004 is used by test laboratories, implementation teams, and conformance assessors working on TIPHON profile H.245 equipment. The proformas in Annex B and Annex C show that the document is also used by a client and a test laboratory manager when preparing and recording a test campaign.
In practice, users include engineers validating H.245 signaling, quality teams checking conformance evidence, and labs running endpoint tests for originating or terminating behavior. The document is especially relevant when a team needs to prepare PIXIT data, select test cases, execute the ATS and record the PCTR.

Figure 3: Test architecture
A single-party testing concept is used, which consists of the following abstract testing functions:
Lower Tester A Lower Tester (LT) is located in the remote test system. It controls and observes the behaviour of
the IUT.
ATS: The Abstract Test Suite (ATS), defined in the present document, and located in the remote test
system.
TT_PCO: A Point of Control and Observation (PCO) located at TT_SAP and used to open and to close the
H245 channel over the H225.0 protocol. All test events at the PCO are specified in terms of
Abstract Service Primitives (ASP).
CHN_PCO: A Point of Control and Observation (PCO) located at a virtual SAP corresponding to the H245
channel over the H225.0 protocol. All test events at the PCO are specified in terms of Abstract
Service Primitives (ASP) containing complete PDU.
UT_PCO: A specific Point of Control and Observation (PCO) located at specific SAP and used to control the
Upper layer of H245 in the IUT. The upper layer of H245 shall understand and answer to specific
primitives for testing. All test events at the PCO are specified in terms of Abstract Service
Primitives (ASP).
Notional UT: No explicit upper tester (UT) exists in the system under test. Nevertheless, some specific actions to
cover implicit send events and to obtain feedback information are necessary for the need of the test
procedures. A black box covering these requirements is used in the SUT as a notional UT as
defined in ISO 9646. This notional UT is considered as part of the test system.
5 Untestable Test Purposes (TP)
This clause gives a list of TP, which are not implemented in the ATS due to the chosen ATM or other restrictions.

6 ATS conventions
The ATS conventions are intended to give a better understanding of the ATS but they also describe the conventions
made for the development of the ATS. These conventions shall be considered during any later maintenance or further
development of the ATS.
The ATS conventions contain two clauses, the naming conventions and the implementation conventions. The naming
conventions describe the structure of the naming of all ATS elements. The implementation conventions describe the
functional structure of the ATS.
To define the ATS, the guidelines of the document ETS 300 406 [5] was considered.
6.1 Naming conventions
6.1.1 Declarations part
This clause describes the naming conventions chosen for the elements of the ATS declarations part.
6.1.1.1 General
The following general rules apply for the name giving in the declarations part. All type definitions (simple type
definitions, structured type definitions, ASP type definitions and PDU type definitions) shall be written in uppercase.
All element names (structured type definition), parameter names (ASP type definition) and field names (PDU type
definition) shall be written in lowercase.
Predefined types (e.g. BITSTRING[8]) are never used in structured type definitions, ASP type definitions or PDU type
definitions. Simple types are used instead.
6.1.1.2 Test suite operations definition
The test suite operation identifiers are composed of substrings in lowercase letters, except for standard prefix "TSO_".
An underscore character ("_") separates each substring.
EXAMPLE: TSO_substring.
6.1.1.3 Test suite parameter declarations
The test suite parameter identifiers are composed of substrings in lowercase letters, except for the standard prefix
"TSP_". An underscore character ("_") separates each substring.
EXAMPLE 1: TSP_t_wait.
If the test suite parameter references a Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) item, the letter "C" is
added to the standard prefix.
EXAMPLE 2: TSPC_encryption_support.
If the test suite parameter references a PIXIT item, the letter "X" is added to the standard prefix.
EXAMPLE 3: TSPX_pid.
6.1.1.4 Test case selection expression definition
The test case selection expression identifiers are composed of substrings in lowercase letters, beginning with the prefix
"TCS_". An underscore character ("_") separates each substring.
ETSI
11 ETSI TS 101 890-3 V1.1.1 (2002-01)
6.1.1.5 Test suite constant declarations
The test suite constant identifiers are composed of substrings in lowercase letters, except for the prefix "TSC_". An
underscore character ("_") separates each substring.
If the test suite constant represents a system parameter, the complete name defined in the protocol standard is used.
6.1.1.6 Test suite variable declarations
The test suite variable identifiers are composed of substrings in lowercase letters, except for the prefix "TSV_". An
underscore character ("_") separates each substring.
Complete names as defined in the protocol standard are used.
6.1.1.7 Test case variable declarations
The test case variable identifiers are composed of substrings in lowercase letters, except for the prefix "TCV_". An
underscore character ("_") separates each substring.
Complete names as defined in the protocol standard are used.
6.1.1.8 Timer declarations
Two types of timers can be identified:
1) Standardized:
- Those defined in the protocol standard, e.g. T105. They use exactly the same name as in the standard.
As there is a tolerance margin accepted for these timers, three values are needed:
- The maximum value allowed, which will use the suffix "_max";
- The minimum value allowed, which will use the suffix "_min";
- The value actually implemented, with no suffix.
EXAMPLE 1: T105_max, T105_min, and T105.
2) Not standardized:
- Those not defined in the protocol standard, i.e. for execution use, e.g. a timer waiting for a response. These
timers begin with the prefix "T_", followed by a string in lowercase letters.
EXAMPLE 2: T_resp represents a timer for controlling the response time of the IUT.
6.1.1.9 ASP type definitions
The general conventions in clause 6.1.1.1 apply.
The identifier of an ASP type uses the same name as the name defined in the protocol standard.
6.1.1.10 PDU type definitions
The general conventions in clause 6.1.1.1 apply.
The PDU type identifier shall identify the related structure or type as defined in the protocol standard.
6.1.1.11 CM type definitions
The CM types are defined as the ASP types without sub-fields.
