Overview

The oSIST prEN ISO 20870:2016 standard, developed by CEN in collaboration with ISO, specifies laboratory procedures for ageing conditioning of footwear materials. These procedures simulate the effects of naturally occurring ageing reactions to assess changes in the physical properties of footwear components. By measuring these properties before and after controlled ageing treatments, manufacturers and researchers can evaluate the durability and performance of footwear materials over time.

This draft standard focuses on two primary ageing methods: heat ageing and humidity ageing. The prescribed conditioning processes help ensure consistent, reliable, and reproducible results for testing and comparing footwear materials under accelerated ageing conditions.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
oSIST prEN ISO 20870:2016 defines laboratory procedures intended to imitate natural ageing effects on footwear materials by measuring physical property changes after controlled heat or humidity exposure.

  • Ageing Methods

    • Heat Ageing: Conducted in an oven at 70ºC ± 2ºC with forced air circulation to maintain uniform temperature.
    • Humidity Ageing: Conducted in a sealed glass vessel at 100% relative humidity and 70ºC ± 2ºC, ensuring full exposure without strain or direct light.
  • Test Samples and Conditioning
Samples must be selected using ISO 17709 sampling guidelines. Post-ageing, specimens are conditioned for 24 hours in standard atmospheres as per ISO 18454 before testing.

  • Measurement and Reporting
Changes in physical properties are quantified as percentage changes between pre- and post-ageing values, ensuring clarity in durability assessment. Test reports must include sample identification, conditions, measured properties, and ageing method.

Applications

The oSIST prEN ISO 20870:2016 ageing conditioning procedures are highly valuable for:

  • Footwear Manufacturers:
Ensuring product consistency and durability by testing raw materials and finished components for resistance to ageing factors such as heat and humidity.

  • Material Research and Development:
Evaluating new materials or treatments to enhance footwear longevity and performance under environmental stress.

  • Quality Assurance Laboratories:
Conducting standardized, repeatable tests to meet regulatory requirements and facilitate compliance with international footwear standards.

  • Product Certification:
Providing reliable data supporting claims related to the longevity and physical integrity of footwear.

Related Standards

oSIST prEN ISO 20870:2016 references several key standards that establish conditions and sampling guidelines:

  • ISO 18454: Footwear - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing footwear and components. Defines the environmental conditions necessary for pre- and post-ageing conditioning.

  • ISO 17709: Footwear - Sampling location of components. Provides guidelines for the appropriate selection and preparation of samples for testing.

These complementary standards ensure that testing under oSIST prEN ISO 20870:2016 is consistent and results are globally comparable.

Implementing oSIST prEN ISO 20870:2016 allows stakeholders in the footwear industry to rigorously evaluate material ageing, optimize product design, and enhance reliability, contributing to improved customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance in global markets.

ISO/WD 20870
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
