Materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs - Test methods for thermal shock and thermal shock endurance

This European Standard specifies test methods for thermal shock and for thermal shock endurance for brittle materials, for instance glass, glass-ceramic and ceramics. Two test methods are described: Test method A is used for articles known to be sensitive to thermal shock; test method B is generally applicable. The test method to be applied depends on the intended use of the article and/or its thermal shock resistance.

Overview

EN 1183:1997 is a CEN European Standard that specifies test methods for thermal shock and thermal shock endurance of brittle materials used in contact with foodstuffs - for example glass, glass‑ceramic and ceramics. The standard defines two complementary test methods: Test method A for articles known to be sensitive to thermal shock, and Test method B as a generally applicable procedure. The selection of method depends on the intended use of the article and its expected thermal shock resistance.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to brittle food-contact materials and finished articles where temperature changes may occur during normal use, washing or production.
  • Two test methods
    • Test method A: Intended for articles recognized as particularly sensitive to thermal shock (used when low resistance is expected).
    • Test method B: A more generally applicable method for routine testing and assessment.
  • Test selection criteria
    • Choice of method is driven by the article’s intended use, service conditions and anticipated thermal gradients.
  • Performance assessment
    • The standard provides a framework to determine whether an article resists cracking, crazing or fracture under defined thermal cycling or shock exposures.
  • Relevance to food contact safety
    • Focuses on mechanical integrity under temperature change to ensure safe continued use of food-contact articles.

Note: EN 1183:1997 describes methods and decision criteria but does not replace product-specific requirements or national regulations for food contact materials.

Applications

  • Quality control and batch testing of glassware, ceramic tableware, cookware, and glass‑ceramic products intended for food contact.
  • Product development and materials selection to improve resistance to thermal shock in new designs.
  • Failure analysis and root-cause investigation where thermal cycling is suspected to cause cracking.
  • Test laboratories performing conformity testing for manufacturers and retailers.
  • Regulatory and compliance teams assessing mechanical durability aspects of food-contact materials.

Who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of glass, ceramic and glass‑ceramic food-contact articles
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Quality assurance and product engineers
  • Materials scientists and R&D teams
  • Importers, retailers and regulators concerned with consumer safety

Related standards

  • EN 1183:1997 complements other European and national standards covering overall safety and chemical migration of food-contact materials. Users should reference product-specific and food-safety regulations in addition to thermal shock testing.
