Abstract

This part of EN 623 specifies qualitative methods for determination of the presence of defects in advanced technical ceramics by dye penetration tests. The results are reported as visual observations of dye penetration.
Three methods are described:
Method A:  A fuchsine dye test which is suitable for white or pale-coloured ceramic products, performed using an evacuation test.
Method B:  A fluorescent dye test which is suitable particularly for those products where the purple fuchsine has insufficient visual contrast with the ceramic material, performed using a proprietary test kit.
Method C:  A fuchsine dye test which is performed by simple immersion in or spraying with a dye solution, suitable for routine testing for major defects.

SIST EN 623-1:2007 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 623-1:2006, published by SIST and based on the CEN European Standard for advanced technical ceramics. It specifies qualitative dye penetration tests for monolithic ceramics so users can check whether cracks or other defects are present from the way dye enters the material. The standard is intended for laboratories, manufacturers, and quality teams that need a visual defect check on ceramic products.

What does SIST EN 623-1:2007 specify?

SIST EN 623-1:2007 specifies how to determine the presence of defects in advanced technical ceramics by dye penetration tests and how to report the result as a visual observation of dye penetration. The document is organized into seven clauses covering scope, normative references, apparatus, test pieces, procedure, examination, and test report.

The scope describes three methods, each suited to a different inspection need:

MethodWhat it covers
Method AFuchsine dye test using evacuation, suited to white or pale-coloured ceramic products
Method BFluorescent dye test, suited where purple fuchsine gives poor visual contrast
Method CFuchsine dye test by immersion or spraying, suited to routine checking for major defects

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 623-1:2007?

SIST EN 623-1:2007 requires the operator to choose a method that matches the product and the defect level being checked, then examine the dyed test pieces for visible signs of penetration. In practice, the standard is about preparing the sample correctly, following the method steps closely, and recording the observation in a consistent way.

Sample selection and conditioning

Clause 4 says test materials should be sampled according to ENV 1006, and test pieces should preferably be whole items or, where that is not possible, fragments with exposed broken surfaces. If absorbed organic material such as grinding coolant may affect the result, the pieces are conditioned before testing. This matters because surface contamination can block wetting or give misleading dye marks.

Apparatus and viewing conditions

Clause 3 identifies the equipment needed for the different methods, including evacuating equipment, a drying oven, an open mesh container, an ultraviolet light source for Method B, an airtight vessel, and a hand lens or low-power microscope. The apparatus requirements matter because the visibility of the defect depends on controlled dye entry and adequate examination. For Method A, the chamber pressure is reduced until the solution boils; for all methods, the final check is done under good illumination or ultraviolet light as applicable.

Method A, B, and C

Clause 5 gives the three procedures. Method A uses fuchsine dye and evacuation, which gives a more rigorous penetration check and is suitable where a strong visual indication is needed on light-coloured ceramics. Method B uses a fluorescent dye kit and ultraviolet light, which helps when purple dye is hard to see on the ceramic surface. Method C uses fuchsine dye by immersion or spraying and is described as suitable for routine inspection of significant cracking or porosity.

Examination and interpretation

Clause 6 says dye coloration after testing indicates penetration through cracks or other defects. The reportable outcomes are clearly defined localized or linear penetration, general surface absorption, or no effect. In practice, the distinction matters because localized lines point to discrete defects, while general staining can indicate surface porosity or surface damage.

Reporting

Clause 7 requires the test report to follow EN ISO/IEC 17025 and to identify the laboratory, customer, test date, method used, any deviations, the test material, the piece condition, the examination magnification, and the result for each piece. This is important when the result is used in supplier acceptance, troubleshooting, or formal quality records.

What terms does SIST EN 623-1:2007 define?

  • Fuchsine dye - A dye used in Methods A and C to show where liquid has penetrated into the ceramic.
  • Fluorescent dye - A dye used in Method B that is examined under ultraviolet light for easier contrast.
  • Evacuation - Lowering the pressure around the test pieces so the dye solution can enter defects more readily.
  • Developer - A coating or treatment used after Method B, and sometimes Method C, to help reveal dye indications.
  • Test piece - The ceramic item or fragment being examined for defects.
  • General surface absorption - Dye spread over the surface rather than a narrow line, which can point to porosity or surface damage.

Who uses SIST EN 623-1:2007?

SIST EN 623-1:2007 is used by testing laboratories, ceramic manufacturers, and quality assurance teams working with advanced technical ceramics and monolithic ceramics. It is also relevant to buyers and inspectors who need a simple visual check for cracking, porosity, or other surface-connected defects in ceramic products. The method is practical for incoming inspection, process control, failure investigation, and acceptance testing.

What changed in SIST EN 623-1:2007 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 623-1:2007 replaces EN 623-1:1995. The foreword states three main changes in the new edition: a normative reference to EN ISO/IEC 17025 was added, the apparatus specification and test procedures were modified, and the test report requirements were modified.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 623-1:2007?

  • ENV 1006 - Gives guidance for selecting test pieces for property evaluation, which supports sampling for this dye penetration test.
  • EN ISO/IEC 17025 - Sets laboratory competence and reporting requirements, which the test report in Clause 7 must follow.
  • EN 623-2 - Covers determination of density and porosity in the same advanced technical ceramics series.
  • EN 623-3 - Covers grain size and size distribution by the linear intercept method.
  • EN 623-4 - Covers surface roughness.
  • EN 623-5 - Covers phase volume fraction by evaluation of micrographs.

What does the SIST EN 623-1:2007 document contain?

SIST EN 623-1:2007 contains the apparatus list, sample preparation guidance, three dye penetration procedures, and the rules for examining and reporting the result. It also gives practical notes on conditioning, solvent choice, washing, drying, and the use of ultraviolet light or magnification. The reporting clause is detailed enough to support laboratory records, product qualification, supplier quality checks, and defect investigations.
