Overview

EN 13087-2:2012 - Protective helmets - Test methods - Part 2: Shock absorption (CEN) specifies the standardized laboratory methods to determine a helmet’s ability to absorb impact energy. It is part of the EN 13087 series for head protective equipment and is intended to be referenced by specific helmet product standards. The standard defines two principal test methods (falling mass and falling headform), required instrumentation, and reporting requirements to assess transmitted forces and decelerations during impact.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Provides the method for determination of shock absorption; performance limits are set in the appropriate helmet standard.
  • Two test methods:
    • Falling mass method: A steel striker (5 ± 0.05 kg; flat or hemispherical) is dropped onto a helmet fitted to a rigid headform; transmitted force is measured by a non-inertial force transducer. Signal conditioning must meet ISO 6487 channel frequency class (CFC) 600; sampling ≥ 6 kHz. Report maximum transmitted force (nearest 10 N).
    • Falling headform method: A helmet/headform assembly is dropped onto a steel anvil (flat or kerbstone); a tri-axial accelerometer (≤ 50 g mass, withstand 2 000 g) records deceleration. Signal conditioning must meet ISO 6487 CFC 1000; sampling ≥ 6 kHz per channel. Report deceleration vs time and maximum resultant deceleration (nearest 1 g, 0.1 ms).
  • Apparatus and setup: Solid steel/concrete base (≥ 500 kg, top 25 mm steel); guidance and speed measurement devices to ensure impact speed ≥ 95% of free fall; headforms per EN 960:2006 (sizes A/O listed).
  • Test prerequisites and reporting: Helmet sizing, number of samples, conditioning, impact points, and impact energy/speed are specified in the applicable helmet standard. Test reports must include uncertainty of measurement estimates (Annex A) and specified data per method.
  • Compliance notes: If direct contact between striker/headform and helmet interior is possible, the test is declared a failure.

Applications and users

Who uses EN 13087-2:2012:

  • Helmet manufacturers for product development and design validation
  • Accredited test laboratories performing certification testing
  • Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies assessing PPE compliance
  • R&D engineers and safety managers validating helmet performance against impact hazards

Typical applications:

  • Verifying shock absorption performance for industrial, construction, sports or specialty helmets when referenced in product standards
  • Comparative testing of helmet prototypes and materials
  • Documenting conformity with European PPE requirements (see informative Annex ZA for EU Directive relationships)
