SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011
Electric cables - Low voltage energy cables of rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V (U0/U) - Part 3-41: Cables with special fire performance - Single core non-sheathed cables with halogen-free crosslinked insulation, and low emission of smoke
- Abstract
EN 50525-3-41 applies to non-sheathed single core cables insulated with halogen-free crosslinked compound and having low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when exposed to fire. NOTE 1 Low emission of smoke is checked in accordance with EN 61034-2. Low emission of corrosive gases is checked as part of the check for absence of halogens (see Annex B of EN 50525-1). The cables are of rated voltages U0/U up to and including 450/750 V. NOTE 2 Cables rated 450/750 V may be used at 600/1 000 V when this cable is used in fixed installations with mechanical protection, within switchgear and control gear - see HD 516. The cables are intended for fixed wiring applications. The maximum conductor operating temperature for each of the cables in this standard is 90 °C. NOTE 3 HD 516 contains extensive guidance on the safe use of cables in this standard. This EN 50525-3-41 should be read in conjunction with EN 50525-1, which specifies general requirements.

SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 50525-3-41:2011 from CENELEC. It specifies single-core, non-sheathed low-voltage energy cables with halogen-free crosslinked insulation, low smoke emission and low corrosive gas release for fixed wiring and internal wiring applications. The document is written for cable manufacturers, test laboratories, specifiers, installers and buyers who need to identify the right cable family and verify its performance.
What does SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 specify?
SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 applies to non-sheathed single-core cables insulated with halogen-free crosslinked compound and intended to give low smoke and low corrosive gas release in fire conditions. The cable family is rated up to and including 450/750 V (U0/U), is intended for fixed wiring applications, and has a maximum conductor operating temperature of 90 °C.
The document is organized into four clauses, two normative annexes and a bibliography.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Tests for cables to EN 50525-3-41, with applicability by cable type |
| Annex B | General data, including dimensions and minimum insulation resistance |
Clause 4 divides the cable family into fixed-wiring and internal-wiring versions:
- H07Z-U and H07Z-R for fixed wiring
- H07Z-K for fixed wiring
- H05Z-U and H05Z-K for internal wiring
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011?
SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 sets out the conductor class, insulation type, cable designation, dimensions and fire-performance checks for each cable variant. In practice, this tells the user what construction to specify and which tests to use to confirm the cable meets the part.
Cable construction and designation
Clause 4 requires each version to use the conductor class linked to its CENELEC code in EN 60228. H07Z-U and H05Z-U use class 1 conductors, H07Z-R uses class 2 conductors, and H07Z-K and H05Z-K use class 5 conductors. For the reader, this means the cable designation itself tells you whether you are selecting a rigid or flexible conductor construction.
Clause 4 also requires polyolefin cross-linked insulation of Type EI 5 to EN 50363-5. That matters because the insulation material is part of the fire and temperature performance, not just the cable size.
Size ranges and marking
Clause 4 gives separate size ranges for each cable family and links the cable dimensions to Tables B.1 to B.4. It also requires the CENELEC code marking to comply with Clause 6 of EN 50525-1. In practice, this is what a purchaser, inspector or installer checks on the cable sheath marking and in the datasheet.
Electrical, dimensional and fire-related performance
Clause 4 requires each cable to comply with EN 50525-1 plus the particular requirements of this part. Annex A then ties those requirements to the test programme: conductor resistance, voltage tests, insulation resistance at 90 °C, insulation fault checks, constructional inspection, thickness and diameter measurements, insulation material tests, low-temperature impact, flame propagation, smoke emission, and halogen assessment.
For fire performance, the document requires compliance with EN 60332-1-2 for vertical flame propagation and EN 61034-2 for smoke density. For the reader, that means the cable family is intended where reduced smoke and fire spread are important, and the test evidence must support that claim.
Smoke performance
Clause 4 requires all sizes to exceed 60 % light transmittance during the EN 61034-2 test. That is the practical acceptance point for low smoke emission and is often the key result needed in specification review or compliance testing.
What terms does SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 define?
- H07Z-U - CENELEC code for a fixed-wiring cable with a class 1 conductor.
- H07Z-R - CENELEC code for a fixed-wiring cable with a class 2 conductor.
- H07Z-K - CENELEC code for a fixed-wiring cable with a class 5 conductor.
- H05Z-U - CENELEC code for an internal-wiring cable with a class 1 conductor.
- H05Z-K - CENELEC code for an internal-wiring cable with a class 5 conductor.
- Class 1, class 2 and class 5 conductors - conductor constructions defined in EN 60228 and used here to separate rigid and flexible versions.
- Type EI 5 - the halogen-free crosslinked polyolefin insulation material specified in EN 50363-5.
- U0/U - the rated voltage designation used for this cable family, up to and including 450/750 V.
Who uses SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011?
Cable manufacturers use SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 to design the cable construction, choose the conductor class, select the insulation material and apply the correct code marking. Test laboratories and certification bodies use it to run the required electrical, dimensional, flame, smoke and halogen-related tests.
Engineers, quality managers and buyers use it when specifying cables for fixed wiring, internal wiring, switchgear and control gear, especially where low smoke and halogen-free performance are required. Installers and panel builders use it to confirm they are fitting the right H07Z or H05Z variant for the application and voltage level.
What changed in SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 supersedes HD 22.9 S3:2007.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011?
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 50525-1 | General requirements, marking rules, terms and the halogen assessment reference |
| EN 50363-5 | Halogen-free crosslinked insulating compounds, including Type EI 5 |
| EN 50395 | Electrical test methods used in Annex A |
| EN 50396 | Non-electrical test methods, including thickness and diameter measurements |
| EN 60228 | Conductor classes for rigid and flexible conductors |
| EN 60332-1-2 | Vertical flame propagation test under fire conditions |
| EN 60811-1-4 | Low-temperature impact test for insulation materials |
| EN 61034-2 | Smoke density measurement for cables burning under defined conditions |
| EN 60719 | Calculation of lower and upper limits for average outer dimensions |
| HD 516 | Guidance on the safe use of these cables |
What does the SIST EN 50525-3-41:2011 document contain?
Annex A provides the test matrix for each cable variant, so users can see which tests apply to H07Z-U, H07Z-R, H07Z-K, H05Z-U and H05Z-K. Annex B provides general data tables for rigid and flexible conductors, including insulation thickness, mean overall diameter and minimum insulation resistance at 90 °C.
The main clause 4 is structured by use case, first fixed wiring and then internal wiring, which makes it easy to match a cable code to a job. The bibliography points readers to EN 60719 for dimension calculations and HD 516 for guidance on safe use.
