Signalling on low-voltage electrical installations in the frequency range 3 kHz to 148,5 kHz Part 4-4: Low voltage decoupling filter - Impedance filter
This document applies to impedance filters in a mains communication system, intended for utility networks or household and similar fixed installation including residential, commercial and light industrial buildings.
These filters are used to set a suitable impedance, in the nominal frequency range of the mains signalling system, at any point of the low voltage mains network where a low impedance equipment is connected, as shown in Figure 1, in order to allow reliable operation of the mains signalling system.
Impedance filters can be used either in utility or consumer networks. They can also be used in conjunction with incoming filters and segmentation filters.

Overview
EN 50065-4-4:2023 (CLC) specifies requirements for impedance filters - a type of low-voltage decoupling filter used in mains communication systems operating in the 3 kHz to 148.5 kHz band. The standard applies to filters intended for utility networks and household or similar fixed installations (residential, commercial and light industrial). Impedance filters are fitted at points where low-impedance equipment would otherwise degrade mains signalling performance, restoring a suitable network impedance so the mains signalling system can operate reliably.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & application: Filters may be used in utility or consumer networks and in combination with incoming filters or segmentation filters.
- Ports and terminations: Filters have a network port (to the mains communication network) and an equipment port (to low-impedance equipment or networks). Symmetrical designs may not distinguish ports.
- Operating frequency ranges:
- Utility network: 3 kHz to 95 kHz
- Consumer network: 95 kHz to 148.5 kHz
- Impedance requirement: At the network port, measured across the operating frequency range and with the equipment port loaded per EN 50065-4-1 (clause referenced), the filter shall present a minimum impedance modulus of 20 Ω. No impedance requirement is specified at the equipment port.
- Transfer function: There is no mandatory transfer function requirement; the filter’s primary function is impedance optimization for the signalling band.
- EMC immunity: Filters must meet immunity requirements in the relevant EN 50065-2-x part:
- EN 50065-2-1 for residential/commercial/light industrial consumer side
- EN 50065-2-2 for industrial consumer side
- EN 50065-2-3 for utility side
- Safety: Must comply with applicable safety parts of EN 50065-4-2 to EN 50065-4-7.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses this standard:
- Manufacturers and designers of low-voltage impedance/decoupling filters
- Utilities and distribution network engineers integrating mains signalling
- Electrical installers and system integrators deploying PLC (power-line communication) or other mains signalling
- Test labs and conformity assessors verifying compliance with CENELEC requirements
- Typical uses:
- Restoring or shaping network impedance at points where large or low-impedance loads would otherwise attenuate signalling
- Improving reliability of power-line signalling systems (metering, control and automation)
- Working alongside incoming filters and segmentation filters for network partitioning and signal integrity
