Optical fibres - Part 1-30: Measurement methods and test procedures - Fibre proof test (IEC 60793-1-30:2010)

IEC 60793-1-30:2010(E) describes procedures for briefly applying a specified tensile load as a proof test to continuous lengths of optical fibre. The tensile load is applied for as short a time as possible, yet sufficiently long to ensure the glass experiences the proof stress, typically much less than one second. This method is applicable to types A1, A2, A3 and B optical fibres. The main change with respect to the previous edition is an improved description of the procedure.

Optična vlakna - 1-30. del: Merilne metode in preskusni postopki - Dokazni preskus optičnega vlakna (IEC 60793-1-30:2010)

Overview

EN 60793-1-30:2011 (identical to IEC 60793-1-30:2010) defines the measurement method and test procedure for the fibre proof test applied to continuous lengths of optical fibres (types A1, A2, A3 and B). The standard specifies how to briefly apply a specified tensile load (proof stress) so the glass experiences the stress - typically for much less than one second - to screen for defects and ensure uniform mechanical quality. The 2011 edition mainly improves the procedural description versus the previous edition.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Brief tensile loading (proof test) of continuous coated or uncoated fibre to verify mechanical integrity; applicable to fibre types A1–A3 and B.
  • Proof stress application: Load is applied quickly (load time), held for a short dwell time (much less than one second in typical practice), then unloaded. The stress must not drop below the specified value during testing.
  • Apparatus types: Two common machine designs are permitted:
    • Braked capstan type - uses speed difference between capstans (with tension gauges or direct strain control) to apply the proof load.
    • Dead weight type - uses a weighted load arm and pulleys.
  • On-line vs off-line testing: Proof testing may be performed on-line during fibre drawing and coating or off-line as a separate process. The standard notes dynamics differ between on-line and off-line screening and should be accounted for.
  • Fibre handling constraints: Isolate pay‑out and take‑up tensions from the proof region; control minimum bending radii so transient bending stress does not degrade strength; prevent coating damage.
  • Load/unload control: Ramp-up and ramp-down should be as fast as practicable; maximum unload time should be agreed between user and manufacturer (example: an unloading across 90° of a 150 mm wheel at ~12 m/s gives ~10 ms).
  • Calculations and reporting: The standard includes guidance on compensating for load-sharing by the coating and on reporting test results and break rates per unit length.

Applications and users

  • Fibre manufacturers - inline quality screening during drawing/coating and final mechanical qualification.
  • Test laboratories & QA teams - verification of mechanical robustness and comparison against supplier/detail specifications.
  • Equipment designers & suppliers - to design compliant proof-test machines (braked capstan or dead-weight systems).
  • Procurement and compliance - defining proof-test requirements in product specifications and ensuring consistent acceptance criteria.

Related standards

  • IEC 60793-1 series - broader measurement methods for optical fibres.
  • IEC/TR 62048 - referenced for stress–strain relationships relevant to fibre elongation and proof testing.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
